Hi, have had the panels and petrol tank off, the panels to re spray and the tank to replace the spotlight relay which didn’t fix the problem.
Anyway, put the tank back on together with the panels and the bike runs like crap :blast

It seems to not be running brilliantly on the RHS cylinder, I have checked the throttle cables are seated correctly, checked the injectors which give a good spray, tested the main plug and spark seemed ok, swapped the main coil which was new last year for another one I had. When I feel the left header it burns my hand :blast, but the right one is only warm to hot, I have looked at the wiring under the tank to see if I have dislodged anything and all seems ok, I changed the relay for the spotlights and the relay on the left next to it just because I bought 2 and thought I may as well whilst I have the tank off. It seems like a coil problem, but seems strange that it happened after I removed the tank and both the main and secondary coils were new last year and I haven’t even ridden the bike so far this year.

Did you check both ends of the throttle cable ? That’s at the throttle body itself and also at the cable junction box -

Mine had the same symptoms at Dent a couple of years ago, turned out to be the throttle cable, as Steptoe says.

Wasn't a very good 600 single

After I refitted the rear frame for powder coat on the first start up it would not run properly or idle. The plug on the idle stepper motor had pulled back slightly.

Not getting very far with this, have checked the cables and all seem ok, getting a spark, getting spray from the injectors. One thing I did was to start her up to sync the throttle bodies and she started, but just coughed and farted and showed no real reading on the RHS cylinder, I increased the adjuster out and it made no difference. Now I getting worried it could be a valve? Mileage is 153,000.

Doubt this is anything to do with your issue but just in case...
Check connections to gear position potentiometer. My 2005 ran like a dog on 1 pot when some water got in there and it was only checked after I'd been through every other bloody connecter.

Thanks for that I’ll check, although the bike has not been in the wet at all.

I have checked the injectors again and if I take it off whilst the engine is running the engine note changes slightly, I have swapped the plugs around and also gone through changing a few main coils and trying with different ones, one thing I have noticed is that if I take off the main coil whilst she is running there is no change to the running of the engine meaning there is an ignition fault.....could I have upset something when I was changing the spotlight relay under the ECU? Is there any way of checking without a diagnostic?

Check both the throttle cable pulleys on the throttle bodies are in the same position i.e. against their stops..

How on earth are you going to get valve trouble by removing the fuel tank..... stop floundering around randomly looking at different things.

Stick to one thing at a time, check it, confirm it, confirm it again, then move onto the next thing in the chain..... Those words, "in the chain", are very important.

:D Thanks Neil, will do :thumb2

An update on this (and big thanks to Steptoe/Neil who is always bloody right :blast)

2 things that I have known about this bike in the past 2 years since I have had it 1. The throttle has always made a creaking noise. 2. The RHS throttle adjuster was broken I.e. had snapped at the thread in the throttle bodies, but some adjustment was still available.

One thing I also forgot to mention was that I tried to lubricate the cables inside the junction box whilst I had the tank off to eliminate the creaking noise.....it made no difference.

Anyway, I ordered a used low mileage junction box and cables from James Sherlock which arrived today, all fitted, balanced the TB’s and she is running great again.......still can’t go anywhere though :blast

Thanks Neil, your were right.........again :thumb2

I have a spare pair of TB's looking for a new home ;)

I had exactly the same issue last year, same side. I replaced the cables and put some antiseize on those threads to avoid it rusting/corroding again. Also allowed me to balance the throttle properly which improved the running of the bike

The fee is usually a packet of plain chocolate hobnobs :D

Will sort something

Also remembered your top tip about using a nail puller to fasten up the awkward bugger metal clips on the throttle bodies :thumb

Anyway, here she is spotting her new black paint job :D (spotlights still don’t work though :blast)

Glad you’ve got her sorted and ready to roll once let out !

She looks lovely and in fantastic condition, did I read correctly the mileage is 153,000 or was that a typo?

If not I’m amazed how great she looks, I’ve recently picked up a GSA with 76,000 and have spent most of lockdown fettling her up as needed quite a bit of TLC, getting there and just the centre stand and engine front case to do now.

Better post those biscuits as taking a while of late:)

Yes mileage is 153,000 with full BMW service history up until 150,000 miles when I bought her from here, she commuted every day from Southampton to Heathrow and back. She was in a bit of a sorry state when I got her and looked totally different.

I see you are Chester as well? What part?

She looks amazing for the mileage you’ve done a great job, I’m in the process doing the same to mine as only picked her up in February but managed a trip into Europe before lockdown, the PO maintained the bike religiously but was more of a rider than a cleaner, slowly getting there.

I’m in Hoole so if you fancy a spin out after lockdown let me know and we’ll arrange it
