Ok so I need to replace my alternator on my 1150gs and have removed all the securing bolts and plastic rear cover to allow more clearance but can I get the bloomin thing out not even after removing the left hand diagonal support tube, coil and cutting cable tied wiring.

Before I either go mad or break something is there a trick to removing the thing.

It feels exactly like a rubix cube and I didn't finish mine and threw it away.

I’m pretty sure I remember taking my abs unit out when my alternator stopped charging. It was frustrating too, because the alternator checked out perfectly with good brushes/housing and continuity/resistance of each phase being bang on. I cleaned up the alternator case and the mounting points, refitted it, and it’s been working perfectly for the last 2yrs since then. Be deduction, it was just a poor earth through the casing and mounts…

Good luck with your’s

How difficult was it to refill and bleed the abs after removal? I would prefer not to disturb the abs.

I did it twice as I wanted to try another abs unit I had lying around. It didn’t work so I swapped back. I have abs2 so no issues with it and I used a bleed valve in each abs circuit then on the calipers. The front was most difficult so I tied the brake lever and let it self bleed overnight.

Answering my own question after completing the alternator removal to assist others.

The alternator will come out and back into the space on the left hand side of the bike as you sit in the seat. The diagonal tube on the left requires removal and all the cable ties holding the various wiring and connectors in the area. This allows access to get one hand on the unit but then the fun begins.

You need to first orient the alternator to allow it to move rearwards and then manipulate it out of the space but it is very tight.

I found that the abs unit cage mounting bolts on my bike required removal to allow the abs unit to move, ever so slightly and this made it possible. Still takes a while tho and will cost you some knuckle skin.
