Hi - I'm planning to fit a Nippy Normans 12v socket to the inside of the cockpit below the clocks. It'll be fitted to the 'U'-shaped bodywork that goes from one side of the inside of the cockpit (just by the winglets) to the other side. It seems to be connected by three little push fit grippers on either side, and one curious screw thing in the middle (underneath the clocks slightly to the right). There's no head on it for a screwdriver/socket/torx whatever - just a flat head. The thread side of it - under the fairing - is more like a rawlplug , no thread. Any advice on loosening it would be welcome!

many thanks

Hi Freddie. That centre fixing looks like a big plastic drawing-pin. It is a push-fit, so just use a flat-blade screwdriver under the flat top and lever it up and out. Start off small amounts each side. I expect touratech make a £50 tool for getting these out.
You sure you want to mount a socket to the plastic moulding? it is a bit flimsy. I bought a NN metal cover plate that goes around the instrument panel, and allows fitment of a socket in the top L/H corner. The original black finish is crap but the product is good, so I stripped the old paint off and sprayed it with a silver grey Mariner outboard motor paint.
Anyway, whatever you do, good luck and all that.
P.S. if you twot the top off the drawing pin, you are on your own!!

excellent help - thanks for the hints, (and I'll not be taking up the touratech £195.75+VAT offer.....;))

I had planned to put a supporting bracket behind the moulding to give it a bit of heft (that space just seemed like a nice cubby hole to put a seldom used socket into). I've looked at the instrument panel too - definitely worth a second thought.

Finally, I'll try to gently twink the drawing pin out, and avoid the twotting!:bounce1

Cheers for the help!

Hi,

From 08 models there is a hole, with a metal bracket behind, by the winglets for a 12v socket.

see here http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=135489&highlight=fitting+winglets

Thanks oldChris,

The only problem I have is that the power supply for the Sat Nav sticks up about 3 inches above the socket, thus would get twonked by the handlebars/cables each time I turn the bars. I either need a shorter power thingy, or a more discrete place to put the socket (hence the instrument cubby hole). Anyway, investigations continue!

Cheers

Hi again.

If you have no room for the big satnav power plug you may want to have a look at MotorMonkey products. These have a USB output socket which can supply / charge most elec gizmos such as phone, IPod etc. Depends on your satnav, but if you can get a USB to satnav lead you are one step closer to carrying one plug which will run / charge all your gizmos, rather than separate chargers for each. Monkeys are small, probably stick out of the socket 10mm? Price was approx £20 I think.
