removing baffle from remus exhaust

I have just had a remus can fitted to my 1200. I am a little unclear as to how to remove the baffle. The dealer told me to drill out the rivet. I am unclear as to what size drill bit to use etc and am concerned that I could do permanent damage. Can anyone offer any advice?

If you drill from underneath with a drill bit large enough to remove the head of the rivet, not right through it.

As the alloy get's thin enough the head of the rivet should just fall away, meaning you don't do any damage at all to the Remus.

You should have the bolt that came with the Remus to enable the baffle to be refitted.

BTW mine's plenty loud enough with Remus headers and baffle in. Too loud for my taste with it out I think.

Have you actually tried it OUT Peter or are you just assuming it's louder???

I run with mine out, and I find the noise much nicer....it's deeper and less intrusive IMO, wheras I found it too high pitched and thus more bothersome with it IN.

Admittedly, mine's on an ADV so it may well be a different pair of noises altogether

No......the drill should be the same size as the shaft of the rivet which is under the head.

3-4 mil should do the job, but TBH I wouldn't worry too much, you can use any short self -tapper to refit the baffle if the whole is slightly too large for the supplied one.

If I remember it was a 5mm bit which takes the rivet out and leaves the threads for the 6mm bolt OK.

I just started with a 3mm bit and worked up, much easier to drill as well.

Have to agree with Fanum, baffle out is the way to go a much nicer sound.

Hmm... Might try it. Think it's loud enough now though but it won't hurt to try.

Baffle out all the time. not loud enough IMHO.

The directions indicated what size bit to use. Main thing is too big will damage the thread that are later used to remount the baffle if you have poofster ears.

When in doubt, go small. You can always make the hole bigger.

I did and the noise was just way too much. I dont particularlly like the neighbours but even I wouldn,t subject them to that racket.

Mind you mine iof the full remus system which does away with the cat. Its already plenty loud.

Should have indicated I have the stock headers. I am sure they quite things down a lot, as i used to run with no pipe!

watch out if you remove the baffle and use plastic paniers... its gets hotter than with the baffle in place

I have plastic panniers + no baffle. There are no problems with this.

I think the problem may be if you have the Remus headers as well, then the exhaust gasses will be hotter.

The new BMW panniers have a heat shield as well.
