I need to overwinter bike and whilst I have an optimate I'm convinced it's still better to remove battery and bring in from a cold garage.

Question is, will this bugger the bike electronics up if left off for 4 months?

1200 GS 2016

Thanks
Glenn

Local dealer have just said that they would need to reboot the system after a 4 month lay up if the battery was disconnected for that amount of time. Really - really!

Disconnecting a battery on a modern bike for a period of time generally does two main things:

1. Stops the Clock.
2. Clears the ECU Offsets Table (learned parameters).

On reconnection, the clock will need to be reset and the ECU will create new learned offsets when the bike has been used for a period.

You could always leave the battery connected but charge it on a smart charger for 24 hours once a fortnight only if the bike has not been used in the period.

The cold will not affect a battery other than it has less energy for starting than when it is warmer.

A fully charged battery in good condition should have a shelf life of around 3 months.

Thanks Galactic. It also stops the service interval countdown, no wonder BMW want to keep the power on :blast Heat I know kills batteries, and I would have thought cold would reduce battery life too.

Had 4 gs's, I take the battery off mine every year, sometimes for 4 months, never had a problem.

I doubt it stops the service settings - these will be placed in non-volatile flash memory, just like the odometer reading. Connect up a satnav or manually reset the date and the ECU will do some maths. Alternatively, why not just do the sums yourself and decide when the bike needs a service rather than leave it to a computer?

I need to overwinter bike and whilst I have an optimate I'm convinced it's still better to remove battery and bring in from a cold garage.

I have five motorcycles that sit 24/7/365 on Optimates (or the BMW equivalent) in my garage. The batteries have never come to any harm, boiling summer or freezing winters. Convinvince yourself differently and spare yourself the angst; it's that easy.

Decision made, job done, connected the optimate to the bike today so the GS doesn't throw a wobbly. Thanks for all the advice.
