tried to remove the black and silver side panel with the air scoops, (having the black bit done in carbon wrap) i undone the two fasteners at the top and the two on the inside of the forks but theres a grommit type fastener on the black plastic at the very bottom of the panel, any ideas before i break it:blast

No idea, sorry mate, I'm too scared to start taking panels off mine:comfort:D Make sure you stick some pics up of the finished article.:thumby:

Check the manual, I believe it tells you how to remove the panel to top up the coolant.

I have had all the panels off the bike, and painted my grey sidpanels and front/tankpanel white pearl, and it looks realy nice according to the dealer.
The two plastic grommets I had to brake them as it is impossible to get off.
The construction detail is very bad to be Bmw.
What I did to improve this I took a panel clip same as you have on all the panels and got two screws the short type as on the panels, the clip on the right is a little cumbersom to get in place ,but got it with some pliers in the end.
If you want to remove the panels later it will be 3 screws.
If you want to keep the plastic gromets you have to go in from the back with a 3mm drillbit or welding rod and try to push the lock out

ps the dealer did not have the plastic grommets in stock

Can we have some pictures?:comfort

I'd also like to see those pictures. White is the best GS colour but there isn't enough of it on the standard bike.

The white TC is the best colour combo at present

Stevie, have you got your bike yet? :comfort

Have I bollocks.:blast:rob
They have asked if I wanted any toys added. I was looking at getting myself a new suit as well as toys , but I wanted to talk discount, I got bunged a catalogue
With no prices on it , so thought , with that attitude , bollocks I will wait till I get back in June. Touratwat might have sorted there shit out by then as well.
:flag

haven't got mine yet so I can't have a look, but I find it difficult to believe you've got to break something to get a panel off.:nenau

Then again I've been wrong before :D

Steve

I have some carbon wrap I'd like to do, it would be great to see pictures if you get this done soon. I also can't believe you have to break bits to get the panels off. I actually wanted to get the grey side panels carbon wrapped as these pick up scuffs and I don't want them either grey or covered in ventureshield so a carbon wrap appeals. They might be too complex curves but the 3m stuff is pretty mailable when heated.

I popped in to a place in Dorking that will carbon wrap those panels without taking them off the bike, and they quoted £90:thumb

That's handy, very close to me of course. Which place is it? I have a roll of wrap already but would prefer a professional apply it really. I'd like to get the panniers done as well. The stuff I have a roll of is 3m stuff and pretty tough so I figure it will protect cosmetic stuff pretty well. I think the big side panels are going to mark up and although I'm not too much of a bike tart, I may as well look after it.

Nothing to do with carbon looking cool and me secretly wanting that of course.

The plastic grommets (expanding fastner) are quite easy.

They look something like this:
Plastic-Rivets-Expansion-Type.jpg

You need a bent bit of rod a bit smaller in daimeter, or a bent awl. (cotter pin removal tool)

Reach around the back and push the centre out (towards you) as far as you can... grab the sticky outy bit with a pair of pliars and the fastner comes right out of the hole in one piece. They go back in by pushing into the hole, squeezing the panels together and pushing the centre back in.

I think it's nasty they use them, and figure it's more about intimidating DIYers, than for a proper reason.

Useful info, I think I'd rather have a couple of spares handy before I started.
