I did this on my 79 RS years ago: replace the tube the filter sits on and get a new housing cover to match. Is it the same with the 100gs? Are there easier options such as the motoren Israel by pass thingy which came up on Voyager's recent thread?

(And I did do a search : no joy. )

Yes, both will work. My preference would be to do the BMW OEM solution rather than a bypass workaround.

I removed the oil cooler before setting off to Africa on the advice of Braken (what was his name?) mostly because of the risk of damage to the pipework. I still think this contributed to the cylinder base leaks that developed during the trip.

I changed the centre spigot to one which is slightly shorter (162mm instead of 170 something) and fitted a non oil cooler cover and the shorter? filter. Everything worked fine in that department for the duration of the trip (30k miles). I remember when buying the bits there was some confusion about the centre spigot and I notice in the bag of bits there is a much shorter (40mm) alternative spigot which I didn't use. The parts fitted to Byron's R80GS are different again.

I'm leaving the cooler on for the time being and I'll get one of those Motoren Israel bypass thingies to keep in the toolkit after reading about Voyagers problems.

The non cooler spigot is tiny (as you mention), Maybe that's why you had some issues?

I wasn't convinced that my oil cooler actually did anything so when I was messing about with a TI camera I gave it a go

The non cooler spigot is the smallest one. Im gussing that the 2 longer length cooler ones are either for early/later engine block/cover, or possibly thermostatic valve cover/non thermostatic valve cover?
