Hello,

I have just joined this site and pick up my nearly new 650 Dakar this Saturday. Obviously very excited but I did promise myself that i would buy an aftermarket exhaust. Does anyone has any suggestions and does anyone know if Akrapovic/Remus do end cans for the 650?

Any info would be great because i'd like to get this sorted this week

Thanks

Welcome to the collective. :thumb

Akra don't list a can for the 650 range but Remus do, not sure of other manufacturers but Remus have a long history with BMW so worth considering. :thumb

Standard one is stainless so why bother???:nenau

Is it to make you sound faster :augie

If so learn to ride quicker but quieter.

If it's to get more power...............you bought the wrong bike.

Save your money and spend it on useful stuff.

I've been wondering about replacement on my 07, not for performance, or mass, just for asphetics. Mine is pretty beaten up as it's an ex trainer.

Short of spending over £700 on a new one from BMW (which I won't), what's the deal with replacing exhaust when the replacement I assume has no CAT? (Remus and scorpion for example)

Sometimes these come up on flea-bay, but I always wonder if it just makes you illegal.

I've a remus that will be for sale shortly. It's not even remotely loud and under 90db (the original is 80db!). Micky said it added a little bit of ummp and saved on weight. I've not tested the original for comparison.

I haven't got a queue yet and no price (not sure how much they are new) - I'm waiting for the bike to be returned from Spain in 9 days or so. You are the 5th person to ask though. :eek

Single can (scorpion for example that i have) does away with cat, doesnt make you illegal, will sound better (if your into that) will weigh MUCH less, and will not effect fuelling as the system adjusts automatically. I still get about 55-60 mpg. Last week i took a trip down to south wales with panniers (more wind resistance), took it easy (between 60-70 mph) and the fuel light came on at 210 miles. '05 GS.

It is yellow so obviously this adds a few extra mpg. :jibber

That's good mileage. I'm happy cruising into work at an indicated 75 (GPS 70) mph and getting around 190 miles to the light. Last fill was 15 litres for 230 miles  just under 70 mpg :)

remus twin

so after reading all the replies what would be the difference if i was to fit a remus twin exhaust - to keep the look it has when i bought it

thanks for all your advice on this btw

I've been thinking of an aftermarket can for my bike, in future...mainly due to seeing a nifty tool box that fits in the space left on the right side left by the "second" half of the stock item.

Anyone know what thats for anyway? Just to balance the looks?

The right side is the exhaust outlet, the left side is an outlet for the "Cat".

i've recently changed my exhaust on my 04 gs, i found it on ebay called "supertrapp" which sounds bloody great, well i think it does. You can ajust how loud by adding or removing the rings in the exhaust. It feels like its got more lower down pull but that could be my imagination. You can get a fake can for the right hand side which is used for storage as there is jack sh.. storage on the bike.

Good luck.:oonyack:oonyack

I have a Supertrapp for my XR, and had one on my CB900 in the states. Great sound and definitely add 5+BHP, if set up correctly :spitfire

But :rob...I understood that they were not road legal here (although I may well be wrong) ...anybody know anything about that? :nenau

The lower tuned models are approved by the US forestry service, and I can't imagine a higher safety standard than something approved for the tinderbox of Southern California

Also...be careful about how many disks you use...more will make the can louder, and they do sound great, and add power...BUT...if you put too many in, and your motor isn't tuned to a high enough state, it can cause problems, such as overheating and incorrect fueling due to lack of back pressure...:rob

i did have 8 rings in the exhaust but reduced it to 6 to make it slightly quieter, i don't think they are road legal either. I'll change it once i get stopped, If i get stopped!!!!!!!!!!!!!:thumb:thumb2:thumb
