Hi guys

I have recently acquired a second hand alloy Remus Grand Prix for my 1100GS, but not entirely clear about it's legality. It's not that loud (but much better than the standard), but I can't see any 'E' marks or 'not for road use' marks etc. Just concerned how I stand when it comes to MOT.

A second question is that it appears to have a couple of lugs on the centre section that line up to some lugs near under the bike near the centre stand. Are these supposed to be bolted to anything ? The standard pipe was'nt supported in the middle.

Any comments appreciated.

p.s. not actually that new to the forum, just never really had a question before !

I run one of these cans on mine with the Remus front silencer and end can. Some people leave out the front silencer and insert an "s " piece which makes it a lot louder. My end can does have an "E "Mark on it but if you are using the front silencer I can't imagine you will have any MOT problems on the decibels level but some anally retentitive MOT tester may take you to task if the can isn't marked correctly. ( I defer to someone else to advise on this)

The lugs on the bottom are there for a reason. It's a 2 piece system and if you don't fit these then the front and rear silencer may flex and stress leading to a break. I made up a couple of bolts for the job. You need to grind the head off the bolts otherwise the center stand will catch them when it retracts. If you grind them so they sit flush into the lugs you won't have this problem. Lovely sound when fitted - deep rumbling with hint of WWII spitfire when opened up :D

A pipe doesn`t now need to be E marked ( or any kind of mark ).

As long as it`s not marked to say it`s not for road use,and not louder than standard ( in the ears of the tester ) it`s fine.

I`ve got a Remus Viper on one of my 1100`s and the intermediate box is actually stamped with an E mark, but it`s no problem without.

There is a mounting point for the box...if you can`t find it I`ll post a picture.

My other 1100 has 'straight through' link pipe instead of the box,and it sounds like Armageddon.....  :D

Thanks for the info chaps.

Any recomendations as to wher I can aquire the straight through 'S' pipe centre section ? The thought of the bike sounding like armageddon somewhat appeals ! :D

Well,obviously from Remus,if you're feeling rich....

Otherwise, post a 'Wanted' ad in the 'For Sale and Wanted' forum here, and browse the BMW Club ads too.....

Good luck.. :thumb

Could you clear something up for me, if I want to get a Remus exhaust, do they do one that replaces the big collector box that is under the gearbox ? Or is this part totally removed when you fit a Remus system......I'm a little confused ??
Cheers,
Andy :eek

The original OEM system is a one piece unit that joins the header pipe at the point under the right foot peg. It the goes under the engine and ends at the end of the Exhaust can - all one piece. The Remus is two pieces - the first join is under the right foot peg and the second join is at the base of the end can behind the left footpeg. It you want to buy just the end can this is possible but then you need a "S"piece to go from join 1 to join 2 instead of using a front silencer. You choose want you want. Without the front silencer (under the engine) I think the noise is offencively loud and you will attract the frowns and scowls of the general public and likely PC Plod as well - not to mention probably fail your MOT. With the front silencer the bike is transformed from a sewing machine on steroids into a hearty deep rumbling boxer sound.

Read the above posts again...and your question will be answered.....

The Remus system is a two piece system, comprising the silencer box and the end can.

The straight through link pipe is an extra part.

So,in your case,if you don`t want the box,you need to order an end can of your choice, plus the link pipe ( S piece, whatever).
Or look for this arrangement secondhand.

Remus also do a system without the middle box. The pipe connects to the header and widens out to a 76mm pipe before it connects to the end can. This wider section contains a simple silencer also. In fact I think the system with the central box is now unavailable?
