I've begun to notice the silencer on my GSA 1150 is making more noise. I've narrowed it down to the fact the junctions between the main carbon can and the end parts is loose.

My thinking is to drill out all the rivets, fit new packing material and reassemble. Anyone done this? I'm wondering what could possibly go wrong and is it as straightforward as it appears? My first thought is that the drillings in the carbon may have fretted to a larger size? But I guess it'll have to come apart before I know that.

Here's the type of can I'm talking about.

Any info welcome. Cheers.

Big Twins and carbon do not good partners make

Did you ever look closely at how much the throttle bodies move on tickover when clod and off the fast idle

Its just the volume of the pulses that do the damage and carbon is a tad brittle in my opinion

I have seen lots of them like that

Interesting thoughts. Do you not think those big pulse would have dissipated by the time they've gone through the cat? I bought the bike with this one fitted, but I also have a couple of original cans (long story), so I'll swap them over and get the drill out...

The Remus Carbon has a reputation of falling apart after a couple of years use..

Yes, have done it, just buy a generic exhaust packing and use stainless rivets.

I have not rebuilt a carbon Remus but have drilled opened repacked other carbon cans without problems :thumb2

Thanks for the replies. I'll give it a go. I haven't ever re-packed a silencer. How 'stuffed' should it be? Loosely, tightly, sooner in between?

I'm especially interested these carbon cans are known for this. I've not heard of it, but then this is my first!

Cheers

Fitted the stock silencer. Today did a 200 mile round trip. What difference. I didn't realise how much noise that carbon can was making. To think I did the return trip to Italy with it like that . I can now just hear the motor running (sounds very happy btw).

Now trying to decide if it's worth rebuilding the carbon can? It needs a baffle...
