Repainting Rocker Covers...

Can anyone suggest how best to repaint a rocker cover on my Adv? It's looking a little sad since a series of drops in August...

The original finish seems to be an undercoat of white plastic (powder coat? ) with a thinner layer/coat of blue over the top.

I can't find a second hand one for sale and, with Motorworks wanting £90ish for a new one, I'm left with the option of repainting/powder coating .

Has anyone done this? - any tips or recommendations? The bike's going to be off the road for a couple of weeks anyway, so I'm quite happy to package it up if anyone can recommend someone who can help...

The same guy in Edinburgh who I recommended before. Phone Lindsay, he's a nice guy, a biker, has a BSc in something or other and really knows his finishes.

My friend Dave, greenVFR on the VFR Club, had Lindsay paint almosts every steel and alloy part of his VFR apart from the engine block but including the frame, fork legs, engine side cases, wheels, frame, subframe, the lot..... A very impressive job.

If you decide to do it, I'll happily take you round and introduce you. I don't have a vested interest other than Lindsay's the brother-in-law of a colleague and good friend of mine.

If you are not determined to re-spray them in the original colour, try Smoothrite. It's enamel so is heat resistant. It will also cover any other paint without reacting. I think you'll find that the silver colour almost perfectly matches the rest of the engine finish.

I've done the whole of my mates engine in it. It's robust enough, doesn't discolour and if you cure it with a gentle heat (hair-dryer will do), it lasts well and can be touched in easily!

Where can I get my hands on this 'smoothrite' stuff ?. Is it made by the Hammerite people by any chance ?. Does it come in black ?

Sorry to nitpick but I think they (Finnegans) only used the Smoothrite name for a short while. It's now called Smooth Hammerite and, yes, it is available in black.

I sanded mine with fine W&D, undercoated them & then sprayed them with Halfords Satin Black. Worked a treat & cost about £10 for enough paint to do them several times, if necessary. Same stuff will do the engine bars as well, when needed.

Are you certain that is not something nasty dripping from that sack hanging there?
Piss can be really corrosive after a chile con carne, you know...

You're dead right! I just still think of it as the former.

Been using the black on the frame and silver for the engine on this....
