Repair cost

What work did you ask for, and agree to, before the repair? Was any work carried out without your agreement?

No, but I did not expect the bill to be this hight even when taking into account it is for BMW parts and completed by a BMW dealer.

I am just wondering if this is normal price? or if it is on the high side and my accent has push it a bit higher that normal:thumb

yep thats taking the piss for starter motor change,

Never go anwhere near a bmw dealer,

easy to change the starter, Have a look on motorworks website,

welcome to treasure island:rob

It's not cheap but dealer repairs never are. Half an hour to replace the starter probably represents a minimum chargeable time and will cover admin and a host of other overheads.

I know that some dealers have 'free' coffee and the like - well now you know how it's paid for.

The golden rule is to find a repairer you can trust and build up a relationship with. Someone charging half the price is not cheaper if he's selling you twice the parts. If you're up for a major repair, shop around beforehand and make sure you're comparing like for like in terms of the work done and the warranty given.

Zooid, you're in London. Have a search on this site for Steptoe, he's the man for your bike. Servicing that is far better than a dealer at sensible costs, none better. :thumb

Not too Bad

Just my 2 cents..... but I don't think your bill is excessive.

It looks as though you have had a new starter fitted, which at £250 is about the going rate, if you buy at a BMW dealer. If you are prepared to look around you might get one for just under £200, or even cheaper if you are prepared to accept a second hand one.

£30 to fit a new starter is a fair price.

Secondly, it looks as though you have had a new 'choke' lever and cable installed. The prices for the parts are correct and they have charged a fair price to fit, bearing in mind we don't know the condition of the vehicle and when replacing my choke lever it was a PITA as the screw on the lever had corroded and took a while to extract.

Yes the price is a little high....but you have taken it to a dealer. If you were in a hurry and it was a ride in ride out service you haven't done so bad.

If you want a cheaper, quality service, then as the other posts suggest, look around, as there are good independents out there........some even on this site.

Good luck

Best regards

Hi everyone, and thank you for your replies, they are much appreciated.

I feel much better knowing that I have not been done over. It looks like Steptoe has just acquired a new client.

Would you guys consider that using the BMW dealer service department to carry out all repairs and services is justified at the time of selling a bike ? i.e is having a full BMW history really worth it?

Once more thank you.

If I bought a bike from someone I would be happier with a bike that had been serviced regularly by Steptoe or one of the other independents like him than by a dealer. Obviously thats only for BMWs; for other bikes I've not a clue.
Some dealers I'm sure are very good, some less so, whereas people like Steptoe rely on word of mouth so just give a good service with no faffing about.
