Hi all,

My R1150GSA has been recovered after theft, and trying to decide if I go through the insurance (and get ripped off), or deal with it myself.

  • Damage appears to be steering lock broken (lock barrel looks fine), unsure of the extent of the damage, or likely parts needed to fix.
  • Beak is displaced and a little loose
  • Screen gone, Tobinators destroyed
  • Wiring under ignition switch cut through

Has anyone else been here and can advise on likely issues to fix please?

How are your insurance company going to rip you off?

Be aware that damaged steering stops = MoT failure, and as they're part of the vin plated headstock you'll be looking at replacing what is effectively the 'frame' of the bike.

They are, but have advised that I may withdraw the claim if that works out better for me.

LOL that old chestnut,

Dont you belive it. once a claim is declared, whether you actually claim or not, it goes against you!

What happens then though, does it get to the point where they say That's the offer, take it or leave it?

Yes it does, if its not a "Top spec or new item", its market prices & tough shit

Been there with the wifes car, High spec, low mileage, but rarer model - offered market price based on the low spec mainstream model -

Argued the case- with market prices for the correct model etc .... Tough shit, take it or leave it ...

If you are handy with spanners , a soldering iron and can use heatshrink with a hot air gun fix it yourself , plenty of cheap used bits around, infact someone on the site is currently breaking an 1150 gsa.

You can probably fix it for less than youe excess, although one caveat , if it has been recovered to a 3rd party agents premises there will be an ever increasing storage bill racking up

It's usually the the "stops" on the alloy top yolk that break off and the bottom of the ignition barrel/holder/lock. .

Which means a top yolk and an ignition body. :thumb2
