As the title says..
I also swung the rear diff down to grease what I just knew would NOT be greased...
THE SPLINES..
Lo and Behold they were dry as a bone and looked like they had never been done!
My previous GS was exactly the same..
Its now very well greased with thick Molybdenum paste/grease/goo/stuff (technical term).

Did u pull drive shaft out through swing arm and grease the other end as mine was bone dry ;)

If the drive shaft is bone dry, the Paralever trunnion bearings will be just as bad. You will need to heat gun it to 100 degs C to shift the thread lock but parts are not cheap so worth doing.

Hi again Bendy,
I saw a Yank mechanic on YouTube doing this job.. He reckoned that the Loctite was totally unnecessary! Is he correct?
What sort of lubricant is used for the Trunnion bearings? I assume the Moly stuff I used for the splines ?

Hi Rocketman
No I did not!!
Can the drive shaft be removed totally from the bike via the Diff aperture?
How is it dislocated for removal ?

The gator at the top end of swing arm snip the cable tie pull to the left (stiff ) and pry away with small bar ,whole shaft will pull down through swing arm grease splines and replace . You might find a youtube vid if u search :thumb

I personally believe the man is correct** but BMW wont have used it for no reason. Who knows if that's legal reasons or technical.
Mikeyboy and Steptoe are the genuine experts on this. Who knows if they will go into print over such an issue is another thing. Litigation being what it is these days.

** BMW require Loctite on the shock absorber bolts. I have anti seize paste in mine with no signs of anything shaking loose. I use the same stuff on my car suspension parts which oddly enough have slo not fallen of. I would say the GS trunnion is fine with clean threads and anti seize paste. But that's personal opinion not technical facts.
