Looking at purchasing a 2006 R1200GS but the keys have been lost.
Would it just be a case of taking proof of ownership to my local BMW dealer and getting a key ordered from the VIN number.
Thanks.

In theory, yes.

I assume you are absolutely sure the seller has ownership of the bike and the reason behind the lost keys is credible.

I would hope the seller resolves the key issue so you can at least start the bike prior to purchase.

What Wessie says!! Well worth an HPN or similar finance / Damaged / Stolen ...... Status check!!

Note the frame number and the Reg and then phone your local BM dealer and just say you are interested in buying a bike but the owner claims to have misplaced the Keys (there are sometimes stolen or finance due markers on them)

Tell them the VIN on the bike is for example Z?12345 and the reg showing is AB66 XYZ AND what would they need from you to organise a key set?? VIN is stamped in a horizontal plate just across the space between the headstock and the tank front and behind the left side tank side cover in and a bout where your inner knee / calf would be

P.S. Dealer sourced Keys are not cheap and they take a while to come in from the mothership! (why doesn;t the claimed owner just do it? It would make the bike so much more saleable !!

If its too good to be true? Its often too Good to be actually true?

Bmw aren’t bad for keys, I had to get one for my bike couple years back. Think it was around £50 and took a couple of days to arrive from Germany. This was a 2011 bike.

However, you need to take the bike to the dealer as they are required to take pictures of the bike and numbers. They also as you say require V5 and proof of address for you to match V5. All as to be expected for security, your issue is getting bike to them.

So probably easier if you have the bike on a trailer would be take bike and current owner to the nearest dealer. Get them to order the key and this will also be a good test to how legitimate the current seller is. If they are above board they won’t have any issue doing this. If not walk away would be my thoughts.

Car vertical is great for checking bikes and cars used them a last few times.

The bike was for sale at a local auction 2006 R1200GS 1500 miles from new probably part of an estate sale it sold for around £3600 very unique with such low mileage but made a bit more than I would have been happy paying.
