Replacement Starter Buttons

The only problem with just using a spare button is that if you leave it in the hole it may fall out and if you put it in your pocket you have a problem if you stall the bike or it cuts out and you have to fumble about finding the button amongst the sweet wrappers condoms and old chewing gum ;-)

Attach a lanyard to it and wear it around your wrist..

We're going to need bigger panniers soon. What with carrying tools, FPCs, EWS thingys, starter buttons, Final Drives, pictures of Ewan, bottles of adventure aftershave, 4 satnavs, spare picture of a desert pikey, tesco club card, bottles of oil fuel and water (drinking and coolant).

Excuse me, but surely all of those are must-haves for any adventure outside the M25. How else would Touratw*t stay in business?

On the key issue -
Carry the bike key on a keyring carabena. Take it off the start the bike and use any other key on the ring to press the starter. Brucie bonus - it avoids scratched paint and excessive wear on the ignition lock.

Buttons Now Available

A big thanks to Steve at Oberon for prototyping and producing the finished item, which is now available and machined from aluminium with a Titanium anodised finish supplied in retail packaging with a replacement e-clip ready to fit. Oberon are selling these, estimated at £20 including VAT, postage estimated at £3. Fits all recent BMW switchgear including GS/RT and K1200 & 1300 S/R.

Their online shop is at http://www.oberon-performance.com/acatalog/shop.html

The BMW buttons are here: http://www.oberon-performance.com/acatalog/Starter-trigger-button-for-BMW-Motorcycles.html

Anyone wishing to sample their wares can visit their stand at the NEC and see for themselves the quality of their products.

I have to say the quality and finish is first class, plus the material is way more robust than the standard plastic push button and should be a permanent repair as the e-clip groove is unlikely to snap and allow the Alloy button to fall out.

For fitting instructions, follow the link below to Chris Kellys' earlier post with a how-to (thanks Chris). Small Torx screwdrivers required:

Loss of the starter button could cost you in excess of £130 for the handlebar switchgear from BMW and used buttons from breakers aren't always available, now you have another option.

Apologies for the image quality, taken with my iPhone.

I have no connection with Oberon and make nothing from this I hasten to add, I just thought it would be good if somebody could provide a proper repair solution at a decent price to those folk that lose a starter button.

Nice. I'm considering smashing my starter button off 'accidentally' in order to justify getting one of these. :D

They will be in Hall 2 on stand 2EO6, demonstrating their new LED driving/fog lights.

Starts off at £20 but price rapidly escalates as you move through the buying process.

I'm out.

Er....rapidly escalates to £24 inc postage. You need to select the uninsured post option otherwise it does cost a rather pricey £7 to send and ickle button.

Having been stranded in France with a lost button and going on a long trip to Budapest next year I am most definitely in.

Subtotal £16.67
