Hello all.

I've been looking for a post I think I saw a while back regarding taking a Mitsubishi starter motor and bolting it onto the 1150GS.

Have any of you done this and care to tell me how easy this was?

Did you use one of these? http://www.motoelekt.com/oilstarter.htm

If not, what was the model/number so I can find one and get it fitted.

Thanks!
Steve

Have you looked in your Yellow pages for a reconditioner local to you? I found a couple of guys near me who can fettle all manner of starters and alternators, the common fail parts in GS starters can be donated from a common car starter for a fraction of what a new one will cost, alternators are the same.

Cheers for the reply.

What I was thinking of doing was to find the model, get one from Ebay, then have a go at fitting it myself. If you look on Ebay, they are fairly cheap in comparison to the one on the link I posted above.

Get into your yellow pages, find places that recon starters , get down there with yours, if you just phone them and say its a Bike starter they will be put off a little, if you arrive with it in yer hot sticky hand they will be very likely to say "Oh one of those" and PROCEED TO FETTLE IT FORTHWITH:thumb2

OK, can *any* of you tell me the part number?

What I want to do in this order is:-

a) find the right part/part number
b) order one from ebay or somewhere else for a decent price
c) take off the current one and fit the new one straight away
d) get the removed one recond.
e) sell the recond. one

Simples.

(mumbles) no good bunch of post hi-jacking tossers! (/mumbles) :rob

Starter motor

Does any of this matter? The guy has asked for a part number and nobody has given him the number yet. I haven't a clue by the way!

Stuart yes it does, but some mornings it kinda goes for it, then slows a bit, then kicks off again and the bike starts.

Some mornings when it slows, it resets my electrics, clock etc.

I know that I should be looking at the battery first but the optimate says its fine. I've just been reading that the starter motor *can* fail (like everything else of course) and I wanted to preempt this happening and leaving me in the middle of the Pyrenees in June!

I also read that they're better and lighter than the standard starter.

Of course, thanks to everyone for their input! :blagblah :D

Would something like this one fit? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/STARTER-MOTOR-HYUNDAI-H100-MITSUBISHI-GALANT-SHOGUN_W0QQitemZ200317898475QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item200317898475&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A5%7C65%3A2%7C39%3A2%7C240%3A1318

Answers on a postcard to the usual address....

I've deleted all the crap that was no use to anyone.

Now back to the original question.

Just look on the Motorworks website at the top of the page, recon ones Mitsubishi ones, its all there :thumb2
I stripped and cleaned/lubed mine a while back and it gained a new lease of life :augie some of your symptoms sound like a duff battery .

Sorry, this doesn't answer your original question, but I'll bet this is whats wrong with your starter-

I had the same symptoms, it resets your clock because its shorting the battery, my battery was fine.

If you view the items for sale on E Bay & via Motor Works site they look very similar but I think the mount castings & fixing holes look somewhat different which is a shame at £29.99 from E Bay.

This is amazing! My starter was displaying the exact same symptoms and I also had a horrible grinding noise. BMW quoted £206 for a new starter which when I took it to bits was in pristine condition with no wear.

I pushed out the two rivets and removed the motor from the gear assembly and there was the problem staring me in the face just as Baileys' link had described. The plate from the gear ring had come loose and had welded it'self to the rotor shaft and was arcing on the coil windings as it rotated.

I shall get a new plate manufactured at work from some alluminium sheet and fit it in place using the same method Bailey used. and the starter should be good to go.

Bailey I owe you a big thanks.

Cheers

Ian
