Hi all,

Due to my bike being blown/pushed over the other day I have had to order a complete new lock for the RHS pannier.

BMW said they come supplied with new rivets as the old one need to be drilled out. Can you tell me if the rivets supplied fit a standard rivit gun :nenau

Also I noticed a dollop of silicone inside the pannier covering the rivit heads, is this for waterproofing the rivets or to protect the contents of your panniers :nenau

Cheers

I damaged my pannier lock and fitted a new one. The rivets do fit a standard rivet gun. the heads of the rivets are longer than standard to pass through the body of the lock mechanism. Mine didn't have any silicone so I presume a previous owner, if there was one, did this.

You will need a compact drill to drill the old rivet heads off. The angle is quite steep and a standard drill fouls the opposite side of the pannier.

without sounding too stupid  what is a compact drill?

do you mean a drill with a flat cutting head :nenau

Thanks mate but I think I have to work a day shift on sunday as at court on mon morning.

Now I have re -read I see what you mean by compact  :o

I have a smallish Makita cordless so will offer it up before I start hacking otherwise you might have a scrounging visitor to booker to borrow it :D

The Makita one i have is very similar but not "as" compact.

I would say from the end of the chuck to the back of the drill is about 6-7"

I'm hoping it will suffice :)

out of interest on this thread, how much are the replacement locks?

part of the plastic mechanism on mine has broke, and I would like to get it back to 100%.

The lock is fine just the mechanics making the lock motion onto the framework thats bust.

Hi Zerocool,

With the lock and rivets you don't get much change from £50 if I remember correctly.

You then have to code it to your key which can be a bit fiddly.
