Is it possible to replace the fork seals with forks in place, just dropping the lowers?
If there is an existing thread, can someone point me in that direction.
Clymer and Haynes describe fork stripping, I was just trying save a full strip.
Cheers

Yes it is possible. Just make certain that you have enough height to allow the slider to clear the stanchion.

Rob,

After using all sorts of chemicals and lots of elbow grease, I resorted to copying later GS production and painted it.

That was five years ago, the bike has had a relatively easy life since but it's lasted very well.

So far, unlike 4-Valve Boxers, where the paint begins to yellow slightly around the exhausts, it hasn't discoloured at all.

Replacing for seals

Thanks Mike for that.

Is it then just a case of removing the 13mm nut from the bottom?
Obviously after removing wheel, mudguard etc:toungincheek

John,

It's just the cap on the base and the hex-nut inside that.

I'd leave the fork-brace until the bottom caps are off and the hex-nuts loosened otherwise the sliders will rotate on the stanchion.

Marvellous Mike, thanks for that.
Might not be done until next week now. I'll ask my neighbour for his garage, it has a pit, so no leaning bike to get lowers off:D
