Hi
I´m planning to upgrade from a funduro to a 1200GS.I have read alot about the bike and problems with leaking seals. Are those problems history now a days or is it still an issue on 05-> bikes ?.Are there other specific thing to look for if i´m getting a used bike more then the usual stuff to check like SHB and so on.

8000 miles and no problems on 2006 Adventure..... SOme of them had issues not all but sadly ytou normally only see peoples moans. Remember we are British it is our way to whinge:hide

HAHA.I Know the brittish mentality. My closed colleague is half scottish half english :D . I´m wondering about the quality when i read in the forum. The list of problems people runs into seems to be leaking seals and corrosion :(

I agree with Ianran above. There have been problems, and the people who have them post on here, so the perception is that 12GS's have problems with leaks.
But there is a hell of a lot of GS's out there with no problems. I read in MCN that if the GS and GSA were not classed as different models, but lumped together, then it would be the best selling bike in the UK.

My 12GS marks my return to BM's after 14 years and five Tigers, and I'm well pleased with it - I must be, I've got more than 10,000 m on it since I got it on March 1st and the furthest I've been is Brands for WSB's.

If you want one - go get one, and enjoy it!

If i find the right one i will buy. Here in sweden BMW and Honda are the only brands that have "cheap" insurances. If you are under 35 which i am....A brand new 1200GS will cost me about 450€/year fully insured :D But they are expensive to buy :o

Fredrik.......go for it! I also have a 99 F650 (great bike) but have to say that the R1200GS is definitely worth it. Will eat up distance at speed more easily and comfortably. Think you'll like it.:thumb2

Go for it Fredrik

I too had a F650 (93) which was a great bike and I had had it ten years but sold it along with my R1100RS to get a R1200GS a few months ago and love the GS. Its a great all rounder and I hope mine will last for many years as its the best bike I have ever owned in 35 years of riding bikes and suits my needs perfectly.

GO FOR IT!.

I now have 16000 miles on mine, and I love it. Just remember, its a mechanical device, so things may go wrong.
I have had a fuel pump break (fixed under warranty), the gearbox seal gone (noticed at service time and fixed under warranty), and just recently (ie last weekend) the immobilised antenae (ring by key) decided to break.....
...last also fixed under warranty, and a long relay home (350 miles), so saved me that much in tyre wear and petrol. It didnt spoil my weekend, and i still LOVE this bike.
Take 1 for a test ride, and dont worry about the horror stories. I love my bike, even tho its had a few problems. Its still a great bike to ride, as I showed by travelling from just south of lake geneva to London in a day..... good day, good ride, and I doubt Id have tried it on the Aprilia Tuono I had before it. GOOD LUCK WITH THE BIKE YOU GET. GS12 :thumb2:thumb2:thumb2

Now i´m about to order farkles from www.louis.de .Good prices and flatrate on the shippmentcosts :P NOT like touratech...:spitfire:mad:

Howzit Frederik, I also went from a Funduro (1997) to a R1200GS (2004) and more recently another R1200GS (2007). As you probably know by now, you made the right choice, for many reasons! The R1200GS is awesome! :thumb

I think it was a good deal. The only thing i´m about to buy extra is the alarm then it will have all the extra extra options you can buy from BMW :thumb.Tonight i ordered Hepco&Beckor crashbar and tank protection from louis.de. Wunderlich was a bit cheaper but the shipment costs were higher.Louis have flatrate up to 50 kg only 15€ to Sweden,Uk etc.
