The OEM grips worked reasonably well but having stripped the harness and looked at the various bodges, soldered joints etc that previous owners have employed, I reckon it might be time to fit Oxfords or similar.

Tell me oh wise ones what problems I'll encounter? IIRC there are issues about the diameter of BM handlebars and throttle tube etc?

Why not just replace with OEM items, the loom, switch and grips are all still available

i have just fitted 22mm oxford to my r100/7 lhs no probs, rhs i had to use a rasp and file to shave down the throttle sleave it was way to big in diameter.but i got there in the end,oh the glue was shite that came with the grips i had to go and buy some loctite super glue.

Well Peter - you will lose the nice, neat system of wiring through the handlebars and have to find a location for the control box.

The grips still work don't they? Just get some connectors crimps and wire.

Another vote for OEM (y)Heated Grips.jpg

Thanks. I'll consider that but suspect the cost may be a lot more than the alternative!
Try these guys, they usually have good used ones in

That's how the Oxford ones look

Thanks for that. Thanks also Bob, that diagram may come in handy.

I wonder if I could keep the oem grips/heating circuit and substitute the knackered oem wiring for the Oxford or other wiring to the battery ?

Nice thing is that the latest Oxford grips will automatically turn themselves off when the ignition is off, so you can wire them directly to the battery. Oxford are very warm/hot indeed.

I have oxFord on my st/gs hybrid as it never had heated grips when I got it.
No problems with fitting, toasty warm.

But did see mikeyboy fitted some Acewell grips that don’t have the huge square control box the oxfords have…..so fitted nicely and didn’t look out of place.
Dont know the cost of the Acewell grips, but I’m sure you know how to use google!

Any thoughts on this guys? The OEM grips can't be far off the resistance of more recent offerings from Oxford etc? I'm thinking the heat is varied via the button connected through resistors?

I don’t think it will work, the loom/switch control the heat settings on the OEM grips and there is a resistance wire in the sub loom (see diagram above)

You could try Ultimateaddons I've just fitted a set on a different bike but did not see ant reason they would not fit my R100gs which has Oxford Tour grips which I fitted. I tried the Ultimateaddons as I liked the integrated switch. Both have a good heat range and battery protection.

Ta for the suggestions so far.

This is a 3 way connector in the harness. I'm assuming it contains a resistor as marked on the diagram above? It has a broken connection so I can't simply replace it with another 3 way?

(That's a chocolate digestive by the way. :D)

This page is probably more useful than that wiring diagram. The plug in your hand look like it is from the switch. The loom on the attached page is the one with the resistor in it. Go to Diagram #32_0781 - RETROFIT KIT, HEATED HANDLE

After years of problems with the BMW grips with Acerbis handguards, I gave up and fitted Oxford grips (with Oxford wiring). Went on easily, no adaption needed, and have worked perfectly since. Warmer, more granular settings, and switch off automatically with the ignition.

Pete if you go Oxford Hot grips Pro there is no control box . They look really neat and are available as sport or adventure look. The downside……….price they are twice the price of standard Oxfords

I bought sim Daytona intelligent grip and fitted a couple of weeks ago, they seem to work well and don’t require the box controller

Hmmm ... What's item 4 ?

(Studiously ignoring Richard's attempt at humour! :D)
