Hi all,

My GS must have had a Vario topbox at some stage as it has the extended black plastic rack, something I hadn't realised existed (or was going to be a problem) until I tried fitting the Givi rack :blast

Do I need to replace the Vario black plastic insert with a non-Vario insert, or is it just a case of whipping the Vario insert out & then fitting the Givi rack?

I had to do the opposite when I bought my GS, the two black inserts are different and have to be changed

I was lucky enough to find some-one on here wanting to do the other way, so a swap was easy. Put an ad in sale/wanted?

Why BMW had 2 sorts of insert is beyond me!

Watch those Givi Alloy Racks - some/mine had a 6 Kg weight restriction (should have read the small print). Went with an Altrider instead.

That's why I went with the ugly plastic Givi rack. The topbox must weigh almost 6kg empty

They come up on eBay quite regularly.

Does altrider one fit Givi Box or do you have to buy altrider box too?

Thanks all!

I can't see why the Givi ali rack would have a lower load capacity than the plastic one... Anyhow, that's what I've got so I'll get hold of a new insert, fit it and see what happens!

As far as I know, you can fit virtually any box you want - if Givi, just order the appropriate fitting Kit at c£15. Alternatively, I think the fittings from a Givi SRA rack can be swopped over to the Altrider.

Got mine from the Adventure Bike Shop in Suffolk.

I've got an ally givi rack on my Tmax; has the same weight restriction iirc. I had to carry two bags of cement home in the top box the other day - nothing failed. 50kg!

I can accept what you say in terms of the rack's strength. Sometimes though, it is not the rack that suffers, but the supporting structure beneath, often only plastic/light alloy, which get's it's load magnified by simple leverage.

Sadly, if you had an accident when on your over-laden journey, you would have found yourself deep in the DooDoo. Neither the law nor your Insurers would accept your arguement when the load ceiling is exceeded by over 40 Kg.

Oh well, whatever, there was no accident, and consequently no deep doo-doo was entered. Life is full of risk...
