Just recturned from Pidcocks where the GS had the recall water seal done and the bike re-programmed. I was given the printout from the reprogramming and it lists BMS-k, I-ABS, DWA and ZFE control units that all needed updating. I didn't read the paper until I got home and see that unit BMS-K reprog does not appear to have completed, anyone any idea what these controllers/units are?

Had a play on the K1200S whilst I was waiting, that's one awesome bike and not what you expect from the marque.

From looking at the schematics:

BMS-k: Engine Management Controller
I-ABS: ABS Controller
DWA: Anti-Theft System Controller
ZFE: Auxiliaries Controller i.e. lights, horn, etc.

I'm sure the initials mean something in German.

I'd be annoyed if they haven't updated the BMS-k as that's the one that needs updating to cure the surging etc.

JayGee - off topic but, what did you think of the K? If I remember right you had a 'bird before your GS, like me. I originally went into the BM dealer to see about one of these when I bought the GS - how does it compare with the 'bird?

Not that I'm tempted you know, just interested in your opinion seeing that you've ridden them both. ;)

Well remembered, the K12S was awesome, absolutely f***ing awesome. I've still got the 'bird but the K1200S outperforms it in every way. The grunt and acceleration from 6000RPM to 11000 is just incredible, the exhaust sound is great and the handling astounding. It's not as smooth as the bird but the fairing/screen work better. It's just not possible to use it to the full (well not unless you don't mind being locked up and the key thrown away). Still a very addictive machine but I'm not about to trade-in the GS.
Cheers JG
PS I'm not sure the print out means on one part its got a tick next to BMS-K program but at thee botttom it says it failed to respond. I have had the fuel mapping changed once before but this looks like it failed to do it this time.

Thanks for the info GSM, I phoned the service manager this morning and he says the print out is what they always get for GSs and that the upload has worked dispite the misleading messages. I'd had the surging fixed with an early upload (aug/sep 04) but I thought there were some more fueling improvements since then. Can't say I noticed any differences riding it so I'm not sure whether I'm confinced the download worked. In for a 6000mile service next month so I'll probably leave it till then.

Thanks, I too had the download done last year and I am convinced it's just as bad. I thought I was losing it but I'm reassured by your experience.

Maybe I'm cynical, but thats a classic "they all do that, sir" response. I'd be inclined to have a word with BM's tech dept and satisfy myself that they all actually do do it!

Good point, I'm equally cynical but not sure how to contact BM tech dept, any ideas?

Um,

What water seal recall are you refering to? This is the first I've heard of it...

Thanks,

JQ

At a guess the seal to stop water ingress into the fuel pump controller?

Yep, that's the one. It's only necesssary for some VIN numbers, I first heard of it in a post here by Dutch which has all the details (give it a search if you want to see if your bikes affected). The day after Dutch's post I had a recall letter from Pidcocks.
