Hi, normally I ride all year round, but this year it has been so cold for so long I have not used the bike for ages, maybe three months. I have hooked up the battery charger, and am getting 3/3 on that, but the bike is not starting. I am getting little more than a clunk. I have breakdown cover, but they will probably just say they need to take the bike to a dealer. The dealer is closed Sundays and I won't be free to do this again until next Saturday.
Any suggestions for a mechanically inept tosser as to what I could try which would get the bike started?
Suggestions welcome.
Ian

first and best option,new battery
second option jump start it from your car and then ride to dealer and fit new battery, simples

The battery is only about a year old, and was a high quality aftermarket job, and has just been charged up, so I'm thinking it may be something other than the battery.

its still prob the battery,do search on here a very weak point on a 1200

+1 see my recent thread about battery. Be careful not to go down more "complicated" paths before trying a jump start or a new battery, no matter how young your battery is.

Like most things, Use It or Lose It. Even if it's been on a charger 24/7 it may have let go in this winter's incredibly prolonged cold spell.

Battery....If you have a car, jump start it from that battery (it won't knacker anything).....press/spin/fire....probably.......:thumb2

+1 Jump start it and if everything checks out ok ie: battery light goes out oil light ditto tyers ok bring the bike for a good long spin and see what its like when u get home.JJH

Hi Guys, well I started it from the car with jump leads and took it for a spin down the coast to North Berwick. So thanks for the advice, and I am glad it is not something more complicated. The next question will be whether it will start on its own next week, but I do feel better now its had a run.
Cheers:beerjug:

Go buy an optimate!!:thumb

My battery died this winter, despite being on an optimate. All that happened when I pressed the starter button was a "clunk"!

I prised the top off the "Sealed for life" battery, and the electrolite levels were WAY too low. I topped it up with de-ionised water, and it's been fine so far.

Can yo do that?

Took my GSA for its first MOT on Sat morning stopping to get fuel on the way. Its been on an optimate for seven months and stated fine. After refueling the bike was dead, nothing on the dash. :blast jump started it from the car, but now I have the brake failure light staying on and running rough as though it is missing. Took it straight to BMW Chester were I have been informed £95.00 for a battery and has to be pluged in on Tuesday to find want the faults are.
Missed the bike so much over the 7 months and this is my welcome back.
Anyone any ideas.
