retro fitting BMW heated grips: wiring up question

Just bought some second hand BMW heated grips and I've got a quick question (probably have more once I start trying to fit them): do I need different bar end weights to thread the grip heating wires through?

I've read some info on another BMW site and they stated that the bar ends on a non-heated grip BM didn't have a hole/cut-out through which to pass the wires. Is this the case with the GS ('99 1150)? Do I need to file some in? I'd like to know before I start undoing things.

I retro fitted a 99 bike and if I recall correctly the bar end weights don't have anything to do with it. Check if your bars are the correct ones by looking for the small holes that the wires exit from in the bars they are on the under side by below the cross bar. Sneak a look at someone elses bike. The bars should have these and if they do they will have a slot at the grip end the wire is fed down the slot and appears out of the hole.

Have you got a switch on the right hand side for h/grips?
 
Yeah, I concur - the proper bars are slotted at the ends and the weights just bbutt up to the very ends. The wires pass through the slots which provide enough movement to accomodate the twistgrip rotating.

Cheers guys, that's one less thing to think about. I checked my bars this morning and they do have the holes in them to let the wires through.

The other thing I'm not that sure about is where to put the 2 electrical wires from the grips. There's a thin black and thin brown, both with metal ends. They look like they should just slip into something. I know to change the switch gear and to just unplug the old one and plug in the new one. That's clear, I'm just not sure about the wires from the grips. Where do I actually put them? Can anyone make it a bit clearer for me?

They should be in a plastic connector, sounds like the wires have been popped out of there original connecting block.

This would then plug into the opposite connecting block located under the tank.
 
Yup,

Motorw*orks sold me a second hand one for a quid. The spades just slot in and then the plug connects with the white male equivalent in the centre of the spaghetti at the tank nose.

Make sure you run each grip wire down the appropriate side of the headstock following the main harnesses with enough slack fo the bars to go lock to lock without pulling. Zip tie the grip wires to the loom and then bring em together behind said spaghetti.

Now the trick bit, if you put a 'u' or 'z' loop in the paired wires befor plugging them in then any water running down the wires will form drips and fall off at the bends rather than potentially running into the socket and corroding it. You will see other (B*W) wiring uses the same technique in other harness bits.

Yeah, I didn't get a connector block. I have the grips and the wires coming from them, each main large wire contains a black and brown inside which terminate in 'spades', (if I use the correct terminology).

Stef: you say that this then plugs 'into the opposite connecting block'. Sorry to be so pedantic, but opposite to what? Is this opposite to the switchgear connector block?
