I have been asked to review the MachineArt Moto Fender Extender for the new R1250RT

Available at Nippy Normans Part No: MAM-AV-RT1250

Arrived well packed, on opening I could see it is a well made quality product, with stainless steel fixings and pre thread locked screws

Fitting could not be more straightforward, as shown in the installation guide, it took just minutes to fit.

Once on its clear it will do a great job protecting the vulnerable front cover.

Some reviews worry it runs a little to close to the small fairings, but once off the centre stand and with suspension active there is plenty of room, at all times there is sufficient clearance.

To sum up it looks factory fitted, it will protect the front cover, and it was easy to fit and secure once on.

Recommended!

Machine Arts own product info;

New from the makers of the MudSling, the Avant Fender Extender for the R 1250 RT is an essential yet inexpensive upgrade for BMW's best-selling tourer.

The Avant features a patent-pending design, and can be fitted without having to drill holes in the RT's mudguard or apply messy adhesives - attaching using two self-locking screw clamps, so there’s no damage and it’s easy to remove and install on another machine.

Although compact and unobtrusive, it adds 50mm (2") extra width and 150mm (6") length to the original mudguard, offering much needed extra protection for the exposed painted surface of the front engine casing, downpipes and surrounding components.

The unique ‘flared wing’ shape widens the splash coverage area and helps direct water, tar, road grime, gravel and other debris - all of which can cause costly and lasting damage - away from the bike.

It’s made from injection-molded polypropylene, which is tough enough to withstand the knocks, yet lightweight, and is styled to look as much like an OE part as possible, to blend in with the bike's styling.

The Avant Fender Extender for the BMW R 1250 RT is priced at £57.00 including VAT, and is available from the UK’s #1 for BMW motorcycle accessories www.nippynormans.com

Good review. Thanks. Looks like a very cool and new way of fixing to the mudguard. Hmmm. I might buy one...

The only thing I would question in their description is, "offering much needed extra protection for the exposed painted surface of the front engine casing, downpipes" - I think the downpipes are well protected by the new lower fairings.

had one on my RT ,the GS and the GSA, your right they do look like a factory fitted item .....and they should be too ....theres a chinese copy available now which is an exact replica at less than half the price.

thanks for the review

BUT, it does afford the much needed protection for the front engine casing. Mine is very worthwhile.

Yup i have a fender extender fitted to my GS. Cost me £10 and is an exact copy of the £57 one being advertised. Its your money, thats all im saying.

No its not, yours is for a GS this is for an RT they are different, why are you posting in the RT forum what you fitted to your GS? :blast

I would imagine the same place I got my Wunderlich rip off for £8, ebay from China.

Might be different shape and for different bike but thats got fuck all to do with quality. Ive had both the “original” and the copy. Absolutely no difference in quality. Only difference is the over inflated price of the original. You don’t like the message, well thats tough, but its true never the less.

Yeah i will do, its a consumer choice. If you don’t like the message, don’t post on a public forum. Its really that simple. If I’ve rained on your parade .....tough, those are my opinions.

There probably are knock off fender extenders on eBay, but the issue with the new 1250RT, is there are bottom plastic wings in front of the exhaust headers, so it requires a complete new design of the extender. The original one that fitted the 1200 doesn't clear the bit of plastic, so a new one was designed and produced. Now there maybe copies soon, but not yet.

Yeah thats my mistake not looking at the post to see which bike it was. But i was talking about the R1200/ 1250 GS &GSA bikes. The fender extender is exactly the same as the Wunderlich over priced item, at a fraction of the cost. Now the OP might well have been speaking about different bikes and you can understand why he’s doing it, because it wont be long before the cheaper and equally good copy comes out and they want to cash in before it does. Ive no proof but id bet they are all made in China in the same factory, but some have different branding on them and that multiplies the price by a factor of four or five for the same thing. Just my opinion but hey ho peeps can spend their hard earned anyway they like thats not up to me. Just giving my views which I’m entitled to do.

On the topic of Chinese bling - I made the mistake of lathering my F750GS in expensive bolt on kit and then rejected the bike and the bolted stuff needed to stay put and I lost the lot. I am talking of stick on tank protectors and fender extendas / huggers etc that are either stuck or drilled / bolted attachments. Anyway, for its replacement F850GSA, I made tank protectors from clear bike protector plastic stuff (looks good imo) and bought the subject £8 item from China as I don't mind that loss when the bike goes. My genuine surprise is that it is of fair quality with 3M tape and good plastic rivets etc that fitted brilliantly. For my old R1200GSA I bought a chinese mudsling copy that worked well for only £20. To bring it back to RT's - all my bling for the RT was Wunderlich and was sold on when I moved the RT on.

Market forces i guess - if China can make these for so little, why do the big boys need so much? I know that design and designers cost money, but even so.... Also I have to bear in mind my engine is Chinese and many of your RT parts will be also no doubt.

Some Chinese parts are great value, others are a bit crap. I bought Chinese copy rear crash bars for my Harley Street Glide (heavy fucker) and they worked fine when tested in a garage tip over (that was not a good day). They fitted perfectly and the welds were sound. They were just under a third of the cost of the genuine ones. Chrome was good too.
