Where did you take the ferry to/from as it doesn't look like the Rosyth fery which is on your doorstep??

AndyT

DFDS, Newcastle to Ijmuiden (£165.00).....

Superfast wanted £325.00 for the return trip to Zeebrugge, mainly because they had no standard cabins....... :(

Great pix

Great photos Dutchman.

My parents live in Jockgrim/Rheinpfalz and I wonder if you were anywhere near there. Nearest sizeable places would be Landau,
Karlsruhe and Kaiserslautern. I'm going over on the bike next year and although I know some great roads in the Rheinpfalz/Schwartzwald areas, any new places you could recommend from your trip would be appreciated.

How does the Newcastle ferry compare to Rosyth (I noted your comment about the price). I haven't booked yet but would need to take into consideration that I am Fife based so Rosyth is literally 20 minutes away.

The main problem with the Superfast ferry, apart from extortionate pricing, is the fact it doesn't get into Zeebrugge until 1130 whereas the Newcastle ferry gets into Ijumuden at 0900, and given that it's just about equal distance with places like the Rhine or Mosel areas, it removes the need to use motorways etc to make your first nights stop in these areas......

On my first German trip this year I started to explore the Black Forest en-route to Munich and I'll definately be heading back there.

There are numerous biker friendly accommodation providers in Germany, a lot of whom can be found on my BikersBeds website: www.bikersbeds.com

Distances From Ports

Dutch,

I had a look on a European map and to me anyway, it looks like Ijmuiden is a good hour or so's further drive than Zeebrugge to the Rhineland area. Obviously, you've done both routes so what would you reckon?

Hi Ronno

Okay.....let's choose a central Rhineland town.....Boppard, for instance.

According to MapSource (& my own experience):

Ijmuiden to Boppard:235 miles
Zeebrugge to Boppard:244 miles

That's a nice days ride on non-motorway routes from Ijmuiden, where the ferry arrives at 0900 or a bit of a dash when the Zeebrugge ferry arrives so much later.........

Cheers

Thanks for that Dutch!

Well worth considering then in view of the price difference.
