how to check TPS
It's ok setting it to 0.36 volts but how do you know if it's knackered
as you can see from the drawing the TPS is two variable resistors that work together when the throttle is opened/closed
the resistors are commoned in parallel on pins 2 and 4
this means that this resistance is always the same as you're not measuring across the variable part (wiper)
the measurements that involve the use of terminals 1 and 3 will vary as the throttle is opened or closed
below is a set of resistances taken as a 1 to 1 comparisson across the old and the new (faulty) all resistances in ohms
pins.....................throttle closed.....................throttle open
2&4........................770 (157).........................770 (850)
1&2........................1640.................................897
1&3........................1740.................................1890
1&4........................871...................................1622
I've only included the faulty readings for 2&4 as everything else will depend on the fault, the faulty TPS varied from these readings by up to 1000 ohms
what it is important to note is that on the good TPS the readings on 2&4 don't vary whether the throttle is open or closed
the give away was that on the u/s one they did
this should help 'cos if you happen to take a spare tps and a volt meter on your travels the meter is likely to have a resistance measuring facility on it
I fitted the new TPS and set it to 0.36 volts and she now purrs like a pussy cat
I'm happy
