my 02 1150 adv is running rich
it starts but then the tickover drops and you have to use the throttle to keep it running
filter and plugs are fine
the plugs are black and sooty and you can smell that it's rich (well I can)

any pointers apart from buying an airhead ??

cheers

Rob

I have tried to get the bike to bmw but they wont do anything for a month

TPS maybe fecked, do a search and see if it's possible to set the voltage. If there's a problem try swopping it with someone elses then try it.

Has it just started happening or has it got worse over a period of time?.
Air intake clear and filter OK?.
Air temp sensor (in airbox cover) OK and plugged in?.
Heres a procedure to check the TPS voltage.

5th from bottom.

the voltage was 1.94 when I checked it and I could only get it down to 0.36 when I rotated the tps fully anticlockwise
took it out for a run and it ran fine up to about 1/4 throttle when it just cut out, wit a bit more throttle it was away again but not too smooth
I checked the voltage output whilst rotating the throttle , it went from 0.36 upto 1.9 in a jump and was then smooth upto 5 volts

as they are 110 quid I would quite like to be sure, any one got one kicking about :augie:augie:augie

I have a spare, but I'm off travelling soon so you can't have it:P:P:D

Perhaps see if you can get a secondhand one, I paid around £40 for mine.

Failing that, see if there's anyone near you whose prepared to whip the one off their bike to try on yours.
I've done this before with Jinxy's bike it's no big deal.

how to check TPS

It's ok setting it to 0.36 volts but how do you know if it's knackered

as you can see from the drawing the TPS is two variable resistors that work together when the throttle is opened/closed

the resistors are commoned in parallel on pins 2 and 4
this means that this resistance is always the same as you're not measuring across the variable part (wiper)

the measurements that involve the use of terminals 1 and 3 will vary as the throttle is opened or closed

below is a set of resistances taken as a 1 to 1 comparisson across the old and the new (faulty) all resistances in ohms

pins.....................throttle closed.....................throttle open

2&4........................770 (157).........................770 (850)
1&2........................1640.................................897
1&3........................1740.................................1890
1&4........................871...................................1622

I've only included the faulty readings for 2&4 as everything else will depend on the fault, the faulty TPS varied from these readings by up to 1000 ohms

what it is important to note is that on the good TPS the readings on 2&4 don't vary whether the throttle is open or closed

the give away was that on the u/s one they did

this should help 'cos if you happen to take a spare tps and a volt meter on your travels the meter is likely to have a resistance measuring facility on it

I fitted the new TPS and set it to 0.36 volts and she now purrs like a pussy cat

I'm happy

Rob

Glad you got it sorted Rob and thanks for the info.
It's worth printing it off and wrapping my spare TPS with that.:)
