RID Gear Indicator Problem

In the last couple of days the gear indicator on the RID (on my 2001 1150GS) has started to play up and indicate 0.
It started yesterday indicating 0 when changing from first to second. Today a 0 started appearing between 3 and 4 when changing up from 3rd to 4th. Later, toward the end of my 20 mile journey I seemed to only have 1 in first and 0 for everything else.
It seems like a dodgy connection or sensor, but has anyone else experience this?
Note The Green neutral light works OK as does the temp & fuel (though the fuel gauge fluctualtes perhaps more than it used to, but thats been happening for a while).

Been splashing in big puddles?
Mine went a bit strange after getting very wet - OK once it had thoroughly dried out.

Wow Bashplate, that's spooky. It must be contageous!

Last Sunday my gear display started showing 1 when it was in 3rd, then by the time I got home it was showing completely random numbers in all gears. In neutral it would still show 0 and the neutral light kept working as usual. It wasn't especially wet but cold & misty/damp weather. I wonder if condensation was messing with the electrics?

I haven't ridden it since so maybe it will sort itself out once it dries off. If not it will be my first warrantee claim. I'll let you know what happens.

The connector is tucked out of the way behind the rear swinging arm, but it is possible to get it wet, especially if you wash it over enthusiastically or remove the cat and ride in a lot of rain.

It will dry out eventually and return to normal. It's not a warranty issue unless you are confident that water isn't the cause.

I recommend a silicone grease spray (available from Maplins) or possibly Waxoyl around the switch once dry if you want to prevent this from happening. You will have to remove the cat to raccess this area to do the work.

:p I had this problem during the dry??? summer whilst still under warranty at Rainbow in sheffield. Leigh the mechanic replaced the switch without any hassle. apparently grease gets on the internal contacts and causes the problem!

Yip Bashplate, got the same problem initially with o's and 1's all over the place at random, then it sorted itself out and now it shows "o" in all gears except for 3rd and 4th. The bike is used almost every day so weather could be the cause I suppose but I'm not that fussed about it. Will probably get it sorted at next service to save on the inconvenience of leaving it to a dealer for a day.

Normal service is resumed

Mine has sorted itself out now.
I must have been a bit over-zealous with the hose while cleaning it, and now the connector has dried out.

Thanks for the waterproofing tips CS. I'll give that a try if it plays up again.

Well, returning to work after a week and a half off at Xmas, the problem seems to have sorted itself out.
Funny though that today was probably the wettest day I have ridden in for a long while. This included a 'small' puddle, that I rode through this evening in the pitch black, on one of the lanes that gets me too and from work. I can only say resembled a small lake (and the deepest I've ever ridden through).
I probably went through it a little too fast as with full beam on all I could see was spray coming up over the front of the bike and not what was immediately in front of me. I guess I was fortunate as I know the road twists and turns there - I fixed on a reflective sign I could see in the distance and rode straight for it, coming out a foot or so from the emerging verge.
It wasn't that wet this morning!
If I'd have managed to fit the 'bobby dazzler' aux lights I'd intended to fit over Xmas, I might have even seen a few fish.
So take care if you go by here: http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.s...=4&ar=Y&mapp=newmap.srf&searchp=newsearch.srf
