Started the bike this morning (1150 ADV 2005 servo). All fine (tho i may not have noticed the ABS light flashing double time, which it was doing later when i thought I'd stop/start to see it it fixed the problem).

Within a few hundred meters i noticed there was no temperature, gear or fuel display. Clock was on. Stopped then restarted. Noticed the ABS light was flashing double time so something obviously amiss. Everything else working as it should.

Any ideas? Is there a dedicated fuse for the RID unit? Click is showing but not changing. Is frozen.

Thanks

RID problems can be caused by HID lights not sparking up properly and causing interference that seems to crash the RID. There is a fuse for it, but I can never remember which one it is, so pull each in turn until the RID resets. Should be fine then.

Start by tracing the wiring and cleaning up the connector pins and sockets. You'll need to remove the tank to get to a cluster, some would say a cluster f**k, of connectors behind the headstock.

You haven't recently fitted HID headlights have you?

Stolzy got there before me with the HID's :D

Thanks for the replies gents. It does have an HID fitted, but has had it for a long time. I'm interested that a failing HID build may cause trouble so I'm going to take a look along with the cluster f**k around the headstock! I'll do this tonight.

It may not be failing or faulty. Seems its just one of those things that happens sometimes.
On mine, if the bike fails to start first go then the RID will almost always crash. At one point this happened so often that I thought about fitting a switch in line with the fuse.

Try pulling the fuse first before you access the sockets under the tank - its an evil job and you'll probably end up taking the tank off, perhaps for nothing. If pulling the fuse works, then you have your answer.

Thanks for the tip Stolzy. So there is a dedicated fuse for the RID? Or did I misunderstand and you mean fire for the lights?

Ok. Used lunch time to look on the Web. Will pull fuse #3 before I leave for home and see what I get! After that it'll be tank off and a wiring check.

Yep, the RID fuse, its the third one counting from the left side of the bike.

I was going to castigate you for making me get out of my lounger and check which fuse it was , but since I found a slug in fuse box, you did me favour.:thumb

Maybe there's a slug in mine, fried to the fuses ;-). I'll let you know!

Ok. Pulled fuse no. 3 and al is well! So wondering what caused the problem. I'm wondering if the HID bulb is on its way out?

Probably nothing wrong. Just something that happens. I guess the RID was never designed to be proof against the kind of interference generated by a half-sparked HID.

Glad you're sorted.

Well. I'll confirm tomorrow if it behaves. In general I have an eye on the electrics now... I'm off for a few weeks on it soon so definitely keen to fix anything that needs it on this side of the channel!

Well so far its behaving. F**k cluster actually looks remarkably clean tidy. For the time being I'm going to leave it all alone but it's logged and noted for the next weird thing that happens!

I had exactly the same thing happening regular as clockwork, eventually I resited the ignitor unit for the hid further away from the rid and it's been fine ever since.

You might be right. I didn't fit the HID and I think the igniter is somewhere in between the clocks. On my other GS I made a very neat ali mount for the ballast and igniter. Will have to make another one!

I mounted the igniters for mine, dip and main, either side of the headstock under the front of the tank. I seem to remember I had to slightly realign the wiring on the right of the frame but that was only a case of undo a cable tie or two adjust the wires and reattach ties. I never had any problem with the RID in the seven or so years I used it like that.
