RiDE Guide to Italy

FYI

There is a new overnight sleeper train from Dusseldorf to Verona were you travel on the same train as the bike.

Ah but..

Treinreiswinkel: A small piece has been saved from the wreckage of Autoslaaptrein. A Dusseldorf to Verona overnight motorail train operated on Friday nights southbound and Saturdays nights northbound from July to August 2015 and in 2016 it'll operate for a longer season, 20 May to 24 September, see www.treinreiswinkel.nl/autotrein/italie/dusseldorf-bolzano. Düsseldorf is a 3 hour 45 minute drive from Calais, or just a 2 hours 30 minute drive from Hoek van Holland, Rotterdam or IJmuiden where the ferries from Harwich, Hull & Newcastle arrive.

I bought this the other day and it's nice to see some routes around Tuscany and further south. I'm enquiring about shipping the bike to Pisa next summer via Euro Bike Trans to save 3 days riding in each direction. It should work out slightly cheaper too once the North Sea ferry, fuel and overnight stops have been factored in :thumby:

Any news on your enquiries Sven?

Ah perfect. Thanks for the info.
When I tried to get by train to Italy last September there was nothing available for some reasons, so I resorted to the Autotrain Paris/Nice on the way down.

I also met a large group of brits on various bikes going down to Italy on the same route. They where somehow puzzled on how the parking spaces did (not) work in the first italian service area after the border.
They where curious while I was getting angry with a guy who parked his car on the bike bays... probably because they saw the UK plate on my GS. :D
I looked at them and just said: "I'm italian, It's ok, I'll just shout at him... that's what we do." :D :D :D

Alessandria would have been better actually.
Will use it for the next trip down back home.

good find, all i need now is to learn german::(

Why do you need to learn German? The crowd who operate the train are Dutch so speak better English that you and me (Glaswegian and Norn Iron):D

I have booked a return from Verona with the bike at the end of May 2016. They are / were doing a special with the bike going free.......now that will appeal to both of us as a Scotsman and an Ulster - Scots man:JB

tanneman: I rode down to the Misano motoGP last year and all routes there and back were brilliant. Plus, having your own bike you can ride up to Tavullia and have a great pizza at Rossi's place! They had a free bus service on the Saturday and I met Graziano (Rossi senior). All the VR46 Academy guys were there on the Friday night - a great time was had by all on both nights! I've no idea what they were saying but the atmosphere was magic. Loved it - I'm a big Rossi fan though. If you support 93 or 99, don't go. :beerjug:
