Rideout to Burnham on Crouch Saturday 25th July

Myself and a few guys from work are having a ride out to Burnham on Crouch on Saturday 25th July.

If anyone fancies tagging along we are going to meet at the Silver Ball Cafe on the A10 between Buntingford and Royston.

Start the day with a breakfast and we are going to leave the Cafe at 08.30.

We will be taking the scenic route there and stopping about every 50 or so miles for a smoke and so the sports bike riders can get some blood back in their hands.

On the return trip we will be going via Tiptree to have a Cream Tea at Wilkin & Sons Jam Factory.

Would be good to see a few GS's there.

Thanks for the offer , Provisinaly nothing on the callendar so count me in. :D

Looks like a good route, just one thing, the route is on part of the old A120 not the new boring bit in it ? (PC plod on a k1200s on that bit be careful)

Any idea what time you will be at Burnham / Tiptree? I may bimble over and say hi if I can get a couple of hours off from the gardening. :rob

PS my wife is a compusive gardener and will spend many hours diging weeds etc (i only do heavy lifting and destruction) only three times in 9 years have i had to dig anything)

And we have a 100 foot garden with a veg patch which gives us lots of fruit.

having borrowed the route, i have just got back.

nice route, hope the weather is drier for you all than today.

although it did stay dry for the fish supper.

Hopefully should be able to make this if that's OK. As I live in Royston it would be a shame to miss out. Do you have the route in Tom Tom format or in Excel then I can upload it?
 
Damn good question, but I have no idea. Just a list of waypoints would do if you could provide that, then i'll just enter them into TT. Can you PM me a mobile no and if I cant make it i'll drop you a call or text. Apparently my daughter needs to go to Hull on Saturday morning and I may have to drop her at Peterboro first thing? Could do with the ride out to test the new Sargent seat out.
 
I've attached 2 files- a GPX which should be readable by most GPS programs, and a TomTom itinerary, courtest of GPSbabel. They're both zipped, but it should be pretty obvious from the names as to which is which.

Let me know how you get on and if you need any tweaks. I've not got the time to dig out my PDA and try the route, but if you have any problems, post here and I'll see what I can do.

Have a great time. I won't be joining you though, as I'll be getting muddy on the pogo :bounce1

Now this is the reason I like this website, people are so helpful even when they are not directly involved. Many thanks for this i'll give it a try tonight. By the way what software did you use to convert the file?
Where are you off to Pogo'ing then, around Thetford again? About time we had another GS friendly green lane again?

Glad to be of service - I've got to know Thetford pretty well now and part of the reason for that is because several people (including AA - thanks for that) have sent me GPS logs of routes that they did in the past. Now I've a bit more experience, I'm happy to return the favour :thumb2

This weekend, I'm going exploring round South Suffolk and over to Sudbury, with a TRF mate who tells me there are a couple of river crossings involved too :bounce1

The software I used to save the GPX file was Garmin Mapsource, because it can export to that format already. The software I used to create the TomTom ITN file is called GPSbabelGUI, which is a simple frontend to the command-line GPSbabel program. It's not fantastically obvious how to drive it, but a little fiddling usually gets what you need. It's pretty simple to install as well - the webpage is here.

I don't know when there may be another big trailie ride around Thetford, though. I'm starting to lead the odd ride for the TRF now (mainly because I'm the bugger with the GPS), but I'd not be happy leading a group that big - I helped out with one ride last weekend and it was complicated enough sweeping (my job) as there were 2 groups and people swapped over without telling the leaders :confused:
 
Best laid plans and all..the route doesn't seem to work out correctly, it apears to be starting at Burnham on Crouch and may actually be in reverse. I guess I can just go with the flow and follow somebody who actually knows where they are going.

How's this file? It's a simple itinerary, but the points should be in the right order now, starting at the Silver Ball, then Burnham on Crouch, then Tiptree's and finally back to the Silver B. Mapsource was outputting the routes in alphabetical order :rolleyes:, but I just numbered them, so it should be OK now.

Please bear in mind that this route is based on waypoints, not the tracks recorded in the original database, so don't assume that the route that TomTom takes is the same as the intended one.

Thanks for the revised map. it looks like the correct route now but for some reason all teh waypoints are crossed out with a line through them, also when I try to load teh itinerary and run it gives the message that "location is not on current map". Any ideas, i've tried loading them as destinations and waypoints and also adding my current location but no joy. I do appreciate your assistance but now wondering if its the Tom Tom, maybe its time to buy a Zumo? Dont worry if it means spending any more time as I dont want to put you out.

TomTom seemed to think the co-ordinates were all 4300 miles away, so I can understand why you were getting "not on current map" errors.

Following a few Natwest* moments over lunch, here's the Mk2 Itinerary.

Don't even ask me how it was done, but it involved the POIeditor website, Anquet Maps and, in the end, Windows notepad :rolleyes: If I do this again, I'll see if I can find something that can be done in a nice 'recipe' format, but at least it should be OK (I tested it on TomTom on my PDA, so it should be fine).

Pleasepleasepleasepleaseplease tell me that this one works...

FANTASTIC young man..that appears to work now! Thanks for your sterling efforts, I think a new Zumo is next on my list of purchases. I wonder if I can convince my wife that I should have an early birthday present in time for my trip to the "Ring" in September?
