Rider II no longer charging

Hey All,

Rode the 1200GS down from Paris to Beaune over the past couple of days, and am currently in Chamonix. Noticed that the TomTom Rider 2 battery was nearly empty today, even though I've had it plugged in the cradle all the way.

Looks like it's not charging on the bike anymore, even though it knows it's in the cradle because it tells me to connect a car headset as soon as it clicks home in the cradle. Happily my MP3 player has the same charging plug and voltage / current / polarity as the Rider 2, but it's still very annoying.

Tried a reset with a paperclip, still not charging on the bike. Has anybody had this happen before? I'm hoping for a handy way of performing a hard reset, or maybe a description of the cradle pin-outs so I can do some more testing.

It'll be the cradle pins - this seems to be a really common problem. Happens to mine a lot.

Make sure they're all sticking out at the same height & give them all a clean (as well as the contacts on the back of the Rider). Keep them well oiled to to allow them to move in & out on their springs freely.

Hope you're having a good trip - I did pretty much the same as you a few weeks ago (although in the car) - Beaune was beautiful. Travelled on into Italy where the driving was a bit lively to say the least!

Can heartily recommend Hotel Klos just outside town (Montagny-les-Beaune) if you're heading back - there's a restaurant a few seconds walk down the road too that does fantastic food (although the decor is rather "questionable")

Is yours a series II? I heard that this would happen on the series I, apparently the pins vibrate and wear away the connectors on the unit, but I haven't heard of any problems on the series II. Will check them again anyhoo.

Had a pretty good ride out around Chamonix yesterday. That is, until I was planning to come back up via Val-d'Isiere and discovered the Col d'Iseran is still closed, which put another 150 miles onto a 400 mile day already. Not funny. Plus the route from Ugine to St Gervais is closed too, so all the traffic is taking a small twisty road via Flumet and Megeve. Would have been quite good fun if I'd been fresher and the road dry. C'est la vie!

Back to Beaune tonight, the Ibis has already been booked.

Cheers Chris, have since binned the TomTom and switched to Garmin. There's loads of opinions out there as to which system is better so I'm not going to re-open the can of worms now, but speaking personally I find the Garmin's ability for on-PC planning and hardware reliability more than make up for their inferior maps and slower refresh rate.
