thanks to all who gave advice on sat nav.

Any ideas on the best rider to pillion coms? I have been looking at the star coms systems. Is anyone using/used this system? Any ideas on any other systems? I need something that can be hooked up to sat nav.

starcom

I've just ordered a starcom-1 (kit C)

It has very good reviews... takes input for music/satnav/mobile phone etc. Very helpfull company, and a lot cheaper than Autocom, and in some ways superior.

But that is not yet first hand experience, but I will let you know.

Starcom

Having had an autocom set up before the starcom....
Would happily recommend the starcom setup. Works well and the rider to pillion is a lot more natural than the on/off autocom unit.

The price is better than Autocom....dont forget to ask for the UK GS club discount...

As an extra they now have some nifty sockets that fit into panels to minimise wires etc! And a new PTT switch if you want to add bike to bike.

Spoke to Starcom yesterday...they are having an open day in early april...will post details here when confirmed.

The only trouble with the Starcom bike to bike set up is that Gavin gets to yell at you for taking the wrong turn off a Dutch Motorway at 110mph whilst talking to my Mother on the phone (also connected to the Starcom unit ):doh

All in all a top piece of kit

think i will be going for the starcom system, dont get the new bike till 1st march so in the mean time let me know how you get on with yours Will

Having used a Starcom1 for a year now, I can tell you that the equipment is excellent, clarity clear and all in all an excellent alternative to Autocom. The lead plugs are smaller, make sure you get them aligned as they can be forced in bending the pins. I now make sure I connect the headsets before putting my gloves on

Have to say, I've been using my Autocom for quite some time, very useful when my daughters on the back.
The Auto Vox on it is useful, though it irratates my duaghter because whilst we are listening to music through it and she starts to sing along, the auto mute cuts in and the music gets softer :) , so on short jurneys we turn the vox off, and we still find it quiter than my old Oxford unit, it hardly picks up any of the wind noise through my motorcross helmet.
Yes it's on the dear side, but I got a pretty good deal on it (though not as good as the starcom) and is ready to plug a bike to bike unit in when I get one for my other half so she doesn't keep getting lost :D

Save your money!
Do as I did when I was a pillon; hit, squeeze and point!

When I was hungry, I hit his stomack.
When I had to go to a bathroom, I squeezed him a little lower.
When I wanted him to stop and did not need a cafè or a gas station, I pointed to the side of the road.
When I saw something, I hit his arm and pointed.

A big benefit with NOT having a comunicationsystem is peace and quiet!

And it's good for the safety and the bodies (health) to stop for a few minutes after one or two hours. And then you can talk and look into each others eyes at the same time!
And the pillon can sleep..... I did!:P

Starcom location and hogroast

Starcom openday... So if you are looking for a new comms system..why not go along and meet them in person!

The Starcom Open Day is Sunday April 3 at their Tecstar address 10.30 until 4.00
Tecstar Electronics Ltd. Bramley Road, St. Ives, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom, PE27 3WS

They will lay on a Hog roast + refreshments and welcome all.

As to a rideout from up here in the north...I'm not sure if I will get down as just back from RO the weekend before! But I am sure some others will go..

Thanks for that Liv. Thats what I would like to do but my wife is new to being a pillion so she would really rather be able to speak to me and as she has just let me buy a new Adventure i think its the least i can do.

You got the Adventure - she get intercom = That's a good deal! :)

I have a feeling she's a little afraid?
Tell her she have a lot of power, sitting behind the rider! If she decide to stop, you'll just have to stop! If she put her glove on your visor, you have to stop!

The power of the pillon! :)

My boyfriend tell our friends (not me!) he like it quiet inside his helmet, and I totally understand that! :P

I'm sure she's gonna love the rear seat on the Adventure!
Perhaps she'll sleep, like I did on my boyfriends K100RS?
...it's not vice to sleep when I ride my Scarver... Beeing a pillon have some benefits! ;)

If a pillion I had ever did that, they'd be off the bike in about 10 seconds, nursing a sore head, perforated eardrums and facing a long walk home.

Seriously.

total agreement with Fanum!

no way will i tolerate ANY interference with control.
however..

Both SWMBO and me agree - its bliss - not having to hold a conversation. its better than meditation - the open road and just you and your thoughts alone inside your lid:)

*curious about the cheaper options to Autocom* - i got one for rider training - its good / but my Road Safety Officer paid for it!

any suggestions out of Maplins? - a cheapo (useful up to about 60mph) set up would be very handy - battery operated only.
i thank you.

Starcom on 1150 Gs

Just recieved my Starcom... bit unclear how to wire it. Anyone who's already wired to an 1150GS, where did you take power from? Battery direct or a switched supply?

Will

power supply

I used a switched supply - cheated and wired it up when I did the alarm.
But there are several switched supplies under the tank.

You could take straight off the battery - the unit turns off when you unplug headset lead

If you don't ride like an idiot, then the pillon won't put a glove on your visor!
It works both way!

My point is that the pillon has som power. The pillon does not have to be afraid; She/he can make the rider stop.

So:
If the pillon put the glove on the visor; I think bouth of you are gonna say that this is the last time the two of you are on the same bike!
-And then you are argreed! ;)

Starcom fitting

For those of you who have Starcom fitted to your 1150 GS's:

Where have you located the starcom unit?

About the only place possible that I can see, is on top of the air box behind the tank. and am not sure how then to secure it in place.

Advice much appreciated

Will

I used a piece of an old camping mat as a base then either duct tape or a spders web of cable ties around the frame rails and another one round the electrical connector on the air box and around the cable ties to stop them slipping off the back of the unit.

You can have a look when you come to pick up the can.
