Got a week booked to ride off-road in the Pyrenees later this year, plan was to take my lad and his 125 with us. Research suggested his provisional entitlement wouldn't cut it abroad and he wouldn't be legal. Asking the question to others seemed to agree.
I've now been pointed to this option - http://www.theaa.com/getaway/idp/index.html?icid=touringtipspdf

Suggests an international driving permit supplied by the AA together with his Provisional would suffice :nenau

Anyone got previous experience that might clear this up one way or another?

far as I'm aware a provisional license is only valid in the UK. you can't have a AA international permit cos you don't have a full entitlement for the class vehicle your driving/ riding.

No can do. International driving permit is in effect a confirmation of full entitlement to drive a particular class of vehicle. So no good for prov holders

A provisional licence is just that, a licence granted providionaly against a test that is yet to be passed.

It does not allow a person to drive outside of the UK, anymore than it allows the driver to carry a pillion or drive on a motorway here. An international licence does not extend its powers.

That is how I have seen it in the past.
Get the lad in for his test asap....
