Hi everyone

I recently bought a 2002 r1150gs with 101000 miles on her. I'm slowly doing all the service items and today was valve day.

When sitting on the bike, the left side went well. The right side, not so much. The valves were very tightly screwed so I started undoing and despite unscrewing as much as possible, the clearances still aren't in spec.

At least they're not super tight! So I made sure they were equal ish and put it all back together. Start her up and she starts. But there's a very loud clicking coming from that side.

I opened up again and tightened a bit and the clicking was a bit quieter but there's no gap and it seems like I need to tighten even more to get the ticking to go away.

Any ideas why there isn't the adjustment? Any ideas on how to get the adjustment?

Please help

Have you also checked the rocker arm end float ?

Have you proved TDC on the compression stroke? If you are 360 degrees out ( on the exhaust stroke )you will have trouble getting clearances. Apologies if this is teaching you to suck eggs.

No I didn't. I thought that was a one time thing. Could that affect this?

Any tips on where specifically I'm doing it wrong?

You need to be able to turn the engine over accurately take front cover off and turn clockwise using front pulley bolt.
Spark plugs out makes it easier.
With both rocker covers off watch the rockers as you gently rotate the engine the piston that has just completed an exhaust stroke will have valves on the point of rocking. So exhaust valve just closed inlet valve just about to open. At this point adjust the valves on the other cylinder. Then repeat the process having rotated the engine until the same happens on the other cylinder

Thank you I have just got feeler gauges to do the rocker and will follow the instructions. I was using the Chris Harris method of looking though that little peak hole

Don't use the front pulley take the plugs out and stick it in 6th gear and bump the back wheel in direction of travel to rotate the engine (NOTE IF you have a ratchet strap or tie down strap secure the centre stand to the front wheel so you cannot accidentally bump the bike off the stand :rob)

Watch the rocker arm press the inlet valve in and then start to move back out again just as it gets to its "rest" position STOP bumping the wheel

its near to top dead centre (The point you are looking to set the valves) there are two arrows on the camshaft sprocket If you shine a torch in they will point east and west when it is @ TDC if its not quite there bump the wheel forward a little bit at a time till it gets there

I suspect that you will find VERY loose clearances

Thank you so much guys. Followed the above instructions and what do you know, the valves were super loose. Tightened them up and she's as smooth as butter now

You could also rotate the engine and when the exhaust valves are down on one side adjust the exhaust valves on the other side and vice versa. Do the same with the inlet valves.
