RIGHT HAND VARIO AWOL

Yesterday morning I rode to FROM YORK TO BAKEWELL

stopped at my mates rented cottage- WTF the right hand pannier is no more!

well i am gutted ( stayed over at mates had to go to pub in his clothes, his wife thought it was hilarious until i pointed out I had put 1/2 bottle of bombay saphire and a bottle of wine in the missing vario)

So gone a full set of clothes, one walking boot - yes the other was in the exhaust side pannier with a bottle of tonic in it!, a belt and the pannier inner bag

I have no idea in the 100 mile trip where it has come off

I came back today and took 4 hours to return tracing my steps nothing !

Any one got a spare?

Must admit first time they have been on since i bought it so most likely user error , but i did check them before leaving and the green tab was showing!I have no idea how it could have happened.

I had absolutely no idea of when it could have come off as I felt nothing, and you'd expect car drivers to let you know if it flew off.

Has anyone heard of any similar problems with other vario panniers?

When fitting panniers I always grab them and pull them back and forth hard enough that it moves the bike if that don't shift'em you're pretty safe.

I think someone else on here had this happen fairly recently

Yep, it happened to me shortly after picking up my '07 GS - riding along a country lane and my offside pannier fell of. Made hell of a racket sliding along the road. I heard the noise and slowed only to see my pannier overtake me. I retrieved the pannier, somewhat scratched, and limped to the next village to work out a fix.

When I put the pannier on the bike that morning, I locked the pannier onto the mushroom bolt as usual. When I looked at the bike after the pannier had fallen off, there was no mushroom bolt - just an empty hole where it had been so I had no way of locking the pannier back on the bike and a weekend away ahead of me. Fortunately, I'd only packed one pannier so removed the nearside mushroom bolt and fitted it to t'other side.

BMW Dealer replaced the damaged pannier and hinted they may use locktite on the mushroom bolts rather than copper slip!

thats some bad luck mate I always think the vario top box will fly off at any time

by the way has any one ever removed the aluminium face plates from there panniers.......... whats under there ? or can they be replaced when dented ?

I popped into rainbow - rotherham BMW on way back today to see why they always have good rep, ( i always have used A1 moto york - superb)
relayed my tale of woe and got quote for new box expressed that i have always had triumphs from a1 york

530 this pm phone call from A1 Moto, jo informs me rainbow have rung them to ask if they had my number as some one had contacted rainbow to say they had found a pannier near rotherham

restored my faith in humanity it has!

LOL! made me chuckle Theres also a specific measurement that the mushroom should stick up out of the bracket. ISTR it`s about 19mm to the lower shoulder of the mushroom, when I checked mine they were a mile out.

picked up case today, bloke said it was spinning around the dual carridgeway for a while,

the aluminium facing is very scratched but i suppose adds character, NO OTHER DAMAGE

BMW dont do new facing , to replace I would have to buy new lid @£60

I have a Right Hand Vario Pannier for sale if interested. From an 06 GS.

The left one went AWOL a few weeks ago and I'm buying a GSA so have no need for it and nor did the garage as they'd have to buy a left hand one.

I'm going to stick it in the for sale section at some point and I do have some photos of it but have got them on the PC yet.

I'm in London though

good spot mine was way out so the latch was closing over the top of it - it was only 10mm

cause found for it falling off grrrrrrrr

X = from the top of the washer to the top of retaining pin -fine understood

if measurement is between 25 - 29 mm then "measured value is out of tolerance"

Action - slacken locknut and adjust pin to x ??????? WTF is X

Or is X 25 -29 mm the desired measurement and anything outside of this is "measured value is out of tolerance"

4 mm seems a lot of tolerance

glad to hear you got your pannier back, great service by the dealer to contact you and good of the passer by to take the effort to try and return the case to you, it makes a refreshing change dont you think, just one question, you dont mention how your bottles of grog fared????????????

Fitted the panniers back on and Loctited the bolts but now find I'm continually checking to see if they're still there......fecking annoying!

A drop of loctite should ease your worry

If you measure it and its different than between 25 to 29 mm it`s out of tolerance then it tells you what to do to adjust it
When I was fitting mine I did quite a bit of adjusting and found that I could get it nice and snug if I lifted the bottom of the pannier to take the weight then clipped the locking mechanism down otherwise I felt I was applying too much pressure to the handle to get it locked down.

Lost a mushroom, right one I think, when bike was year old. Williams charged me for new one (£15-16?).Make sure locknut is tight!!

I lost the left hand pannier a couple of weeks ago and have not seen or heard of it since. I contacted Alan Jeffries where I bought it in January and they knocked £100 off the cost of a replacement. Still expensive though!
