Rim locks

I'm having a hell of a job getting an 18" rear tyre off.

there's a rim lock on - I've followed all the guides but I can't get the tyre bead to sit in the rim well, so can't get any more than 2 levers in.

I've never removed a tyre with a rim lock before, so, any tips before I head off to get reamed at a tyre shop?
 
Take valve core out.

Break the bead.

Spray soap/water solution into cavity between tyre bead and rim.

Have the rimlock located between your knees as you kneel on tyre, left knee at 7 o'clock, right knee at 5 o'clock, rimlock at 6 o'clock.

At 12 o'clock on the wheel, start to dismount the tyre, encouraging the tyre into the centre dip in the rim at all other places.

Pull lever 1 over at first point, if longish lever, locate lever 1 under brake disc.

The with lever 2, have a pull over approx 3" from lever 1, when over so lever 2 touches disc, pull out of bead and take another pull-over at another 3"..... then repeat until bead/tyre slackens......
 
Thanks, but I tried all that - the tyre is so stiff, despite the fact it was in the airing cupboard all night (am I in the doghouse for that), that no amount of kneeling/standing will get it into the bead. I can force it in with a bead breaker, but man it's a solid tyre.

I don't know whether it's the tyre - a 'Kings Tyre' or the rimlock or a mixture of both. It's certainly the stiffest bead I've come across.

The MT21 front popped off really easily. :nenau

One more go then it's off the the tyre shop... :(
 
Well, after the tyre shop did the business I saw where my problem was.

I think rim locks need pressing and holding in. Otherwise the extra thick innertube just pushes it back against the rim, preventing the bead from ever sitting in the well.

The inner tube was extra thick 'cos the previous owner had cut an old inner tube down the outside, effextively making a double thickness bed against the rim well/spoke tops. Is this common practise?
