Ring Antenna

I believe the problem lies in faulty ring antenna, some kind of manufacturing fault. This means they don't work as well as they should and therefore the system is more vulnerable to electromagnetic interference.

If it happens to you, you need a new ring piece. To get going again, turn the bike off and wheel it away from any possible sources of EM interference. This includes electrical power lines and kind of radio transmitter such as cellular masts, police equipment, and especially any ham radio equipment. This isn't guaranteed to work but its the best you can do and its better than waiting for a recovery truck.

Personally I'm quite happy with my existing ring piece, and no matter how many times EWS flashes I'm keeping it!

It happened to me

2007 1200 ADV - 7000 miles

Parked at Doninigton Park Services on the M1

EWS failure.

Pulled into a parking space, put side stand down, in gear, engine stops. Then car in front moves off, so push bike forward, ignition still on, use brake to stop, turn ignition off, head in for coffee, come back, bike nooooooo start.

EWS! warning on.

BMW assisist contacted and brought home in recovery truck.

Never heard of this until a short search on the forum.

Tomorrow (Monday) onto BMW dealer.

AAAARGHHHH!!!!!!!!!

Rant at BMW

I didnt spend over £11,000 on a new bike and fit panniers to carry around spare parts for the bike in case of a breakdown.

Or fit a spare, at my cost, a ring Antenna just in case.

Panniers are for beer and chocolate.

Should have kept the 1100 - red one and faster than the rest.

Oh and when I get the bike back BMW WILL have fixed the front end wobble and I will not accept, oh its the tyre wearing unevenly, we'll replace it the next time.

No you'll not you'll fix it now.

Same thing on top of Mont Ventoux, France, with it's very large radio / radar dish.

Skuppered the alarm cutout on a 600 Kwacka. Rolled it down the hill and all was well.

A little bit off topic, but Mont Ventoux is a cracker for buggering up electronic stuff. I am very partial to the area, and so far I have had problems with a bike alarm (US-made, not EWS or BMW), a video camera, mobile phone, and probably my brain. At least it's a good and easy downhill coast for help.
