Nightmare news arrived this morning. My 07 GSA has been written off following a low speed T bone with a white van. I have seen the estimate and the repair comes out around £5.5K. The insurers are offering £9.7K for total loss however I cannot source a 2nd hand replacement for any way near that amount and a new similar spec bike is £13.2K,with delivery in July.

My bike = 1200GSA with alloy luggage, ABS, computer, grips, spokes, GPS bracket and DC cabling, hugger, lamp guards, bash plate, front engine guard and loved by me!

Have we any experience of my situation? All advice will be gratefully received.

Cheers

Doug

Simple answer is to get your insurers to source you a similar bike, in similar condition........... :rob

Do not accept there first offer.... put your case to them and fight.

This happens a lot with 'classic cars' etc.

Stick to you point be blunt but not rude. They will come round.

Third or forth offer will be if not very close to what you want.

Get a dealer to source the exact spec for you and put this to the insurers.

Make sure you take off all bits that you can for spares especially TT and the like and whatever you can (they broke in the accident right?)........ and I'm really sorry about the loss of your bike mate.....

Defo knock back first offers.
As the chaps have said, a replacement is required, you may have to add the 'excess' if your policy stated.
As for the tat, go and get it asap, in fact I'll be suprised if the salvage squad haven't got it on ebay already, fecking vultures.

Timpo.

if its fully comp and you've declared and paid excess for the extras - they belong to the ins co.

as a write off - its their property.

however - buy the salvage back and fix it - if you can

It's only the insurers property if he accepts their offer and they pay him out.

What surprises me is that the damage for the bike comes to
£5.5K and yet the insurance company want to write it off and pay out almost twice that!

What class of write off is it? If it's 'damaged, repairable' (which it seems to be) couldn't you accept the offer then buy back the bike then repair it?

+1 one on that. I had a get off on the Dempster Hwy in the Canadian NWT that was mostly cosmetic. The estimate came to $11,500, so it was a total write off. They paid me $18,500 and I bought it back for $7,500. The total cost to put it right was $400, mostly my labor and paint. Now I'm riding a '06 GSA for $8,000.

Doug - bad news indeed, and sorry to hear that.

Question - did you used to have an R80RT and also a k12??? (and a boat?)

OK

Thanks so far. The damage is not that bad. I rode it home!

It looks like I will start some negotiation with the insurers as I have nothing to lose. Wonder what the buy back price will be as I am not too bad with spanner.. What I will need is another GSA with rear end damage!

Yep, R80 (which you bought from me!) and a Rib in the drive. The k12 was swapped for the GS which is now in a sorry state. Nice to hear from you, how's the bike?

I will publish my results on completion for others who may be in this unfortunate situation.

Cheers

Hi Doug,

The bike is now with a new owner and I think 100% fully restored and loving living in the countryside of Perthshire - I think that I spent 99% of the time with it admiring it and restoring it and only about 1000miles riding it!!.

Hope you get your insurance thing fixed sooner and you get back on the road very soon.

Regards.

Mike

Remember that their repair price includes BMW labour.

I reckon that if you buy the salvage and speak to your friendly dealer, they will probably discount the new parts that you need.

The only problem then is that your bike will show up on HPI etc as a damaged repairable, it might put future buyers off.
