I haven't had my full bike licence that long really, but have had a lot of bikes in the short space of time........I believe in supporting local dealers (except in Bedford which I boycott), so have popped over to Riverside in Northampton many times. OK, for those of you who don't know Riverside, they are a Suzuki/Yamaha/KTM/Ducati dealer along with a healthy amount of used bikes. Conviently located on a retail park, near to Pets R Us and Pizza Hut, I can justifiably take My Dearly Beloved with me and appease her with 12" of Pepperoni and Pineapple after we have spent considerable time perusing the Metal.

The first time I went in there, with copious amounts of money stuffed in my wallet, I REALLY wanted to buy the Ducati Multistrada. I was approached by a spotty looking youth who donned a funky t-shirt, boot-flare jeans, sipping his cappucino who seemed more interested in lounging over the bikes in an attempt to impress the girlies. Nevertheless, determined to make a purchase, I asked about a test ride on the Multistrada - the response was : Not until April mate and we haven't got any demo bikes - despit the fact that there was a "used" bike in the line-up. He returned to preening himself in a RR mirror and we went to Pizza Hut....................

2nd time - went to look at a Suzuki DL Vstrom 1000 & 650 on the "traily-theme" - when we eventually managed to attract the attention of a passing sales-person his response to my inquiry was "Nah, don't have the 1000, it's far to big - the 650? Gutless, doesn't go mate - waste of time......." He went back to squeezing his spots and we went to Pizza Hut.............

3rd time - yesterday - went to look at the Ducati 749 - in yellow, again, wallet bulging.......... with credit card(s) - space made in the garage in anticipation.............. Had to wait 10 minutes whilst the Sales (and I use that term losely) Person finished off his conversation on his mobile......and then I inquired about test ride......after a lot of teeth-sucking and chin rubbing he said " weeeelllllll - we want a grand deposit, we don't really like people test riding them....especially in this weather (it was dry!) - you need to bring your licence (really!?)". It was like getting blood from a stone.........we left and went to Pizza Hut.....

I heard a rumour that Riverside are facing financial difficulty - is it any wonder? The staff are boderline on ignorant - I felt like an inconvenience rather than a customer with money to spend. I wouldn't buy a bike from them even if they were the cheapest in the country.

On a better note - went to D&K, Newcastle-Under-Lyme - they will show you how it should be done! Knowledgeable, curteous, really, really helpful, friendly, not pushy - brilliant place! That's where my money will go...........

Yep, got it in one Jaf. I go in there from time to time, BUT only to by the odd bit, such as cleaning stuff. However, there is no way i would buy a bike from them. I have watched the sales staff doing their thang, and have never been impressed. Generally they radiate an air of indifference at best, and downright arrogance generally. No I can't provide evidence of this, but just an impression i get.
Mind you, the little cafe in the corner of the showroom does a cracking brew!!

Been in there myself on a few occasions in the past and I have to say that it reminded me an awful lot of Motorcycle City/Riossi. Their attitude and general air of indifference was sadly all too familiar to anyone unlucky enough to have bought a bike from them (Me, twice...)

Still look what happened to MC. With any luck it sounds as if this lot will go the same way and why not? It's your money you're spending. Most of the BMW dealers (Bike ones, I haven't tried the car fraternity) I've tried prove that you can charge people profit-making prices for things as long as they feel like a proper customer, not just another sucker paying their clearasil bill...

Do the decent thing and vote with your feet. Oh and get yourself a 12GS.

I almost bought my Ducati 999 from Riverside as it is my closest Ducati dealer. They had a stonking deal on a yellow one but I wanted red and they refused to match the deal.

Ended up buying from a dealer in London who brought the bike (red) to my doorstep for the same as what Riverside wanted for the yellow one.

I took it to Riverside for the first service and the service warning indicator (a small LCD wrench in the display) was still lit when I rode off. I called in the next day, they said it would go off by itself after 50 miles or so (Huh!). Suprise, suprise it didn't and they asked me to bring it back in and they'll turn it off but it'll take an hour to strip the fairings and get to the bit they need to turn it off.

Inspecting the bike after the service I don't think they did a thing to be honest. It's hard to say, they may have changed the oil, but they did not lube the chain and there were no other physical signs of a service taking place. The service light still being lit may be more than just an ommission on their part.

GS12?

Err, Mrs Jafdp here - He Who Must Be Obeyed (Hahahahahahaha) already has a GS1200 (least I think thats what it is) - big thing, red and silver, takes up a load of space in the garage - sits alongside the Blackbird...barely enough room left for the tumble dryer..........................:D

If you are looking for a Ducati in the Northants area, try Forza Italia at Silverstone. Used to be part of Baines, but now seperate. Very honest. The only grip is that trade in quotes are low ...

Not surprisingly they do ... moto guzzi, MV and Ducati

Onyerbike and Onyerducati near Aylesbury have most of the alternative bikes to BMW that you may be interested in for demo.

I was there the other week and they had multistrada's, stroms, capo's.

By the way having ridden one I can say the 650 Strom is a fine handling budget bike and certainly not gutless.
