Hi

New member / first post

I have just bought an R80 G/S '83. It has worn Enduro 3's on it. It looks like many of the new technology tyres like Tourances and Anakee's do not come with an 18" rear option.

What new technology tyres would be good for road oriented use. I like the stylie of block tread patterns - but handling and grip especially in the wet are more important.

Given the 18" rear wheel it looks like my options are MT60, Trailmax, Sahara 3, Sirac & Trailwings

I looked at the tyre sticky but it looks like it was written nearly 10 years ago and the reviews for some of the above say "no info avialable"

Suggestions greatly appreciated

regards

-Pete

I use the tyres the bike was designed around ..
Metzler Enduro 1 front
Metzler Enduro 2 rear..
OK for green lanes and very good for pissing off rice rocket riders by riding underneath them on the twistys :D

It says a lot for them that they are still being made 30 years on, completely unmodified....

I wondered if the Metzeler 1 & 2 were too off road oriented. I think they have been around for ages. tyres get better every year (from a sports bike perspective), and new tyres like anakee and tourance exp's seam to take technology forward. I was wondering if there are other brands/tyres that are newer/better but fit an 18" rear.

I'd put up a picture of my bike - but I can' work out how :-(

They were never Off Road orientated, they are Gelander [ green lane ] Strasse [street ] biased just like the g/s is
It even states that in the link >>

I've not found better tyres in all the years I've been riding Monos g/s's

30 of them :rob

FYI last pair I bought were £115 from Sherlocks for the pair ...

as proff says, they are bloody good tyres.

work far better than they look like they ought to, on road and off.

Gotta say it, the old fella is right. The Metz 1 and 2 on my g/s are great.

(I might get something slightly more chunky for off-road work.)

Another one for the saharas, Ive ridden a lot in the wet and these tyres are better in my opinion than many modern road tyres , especially sports tyres that are designed to work at track type temperatures. The saharas will work well in all conditions and temperatures.
Dont be fooled by all the guff about "sticky "tyres and the comments of the MCN journo's:rob

sidestand down with saharas .
don,t use them any more , old mans wee is one thing , old mans sh*t is something else .:thumb2

1st 80g/s I rode did not have the sidestand..
So I'll raise you rocker covers scraping,L+R, and me still stopping on board:eek
Those Metzy 1+2 really REALLY should not handle as well as they do...

i submit , i know when i,m beaten .:hide

seriously though , saharas are bloody good tyres , pity they only last 3 to 3 1/2 thousand miles . i,m using conti escapes now , good tyres and they seem to last a bit longer (not as good offroad ) .

Main problem here is South Australia is that the sealed roads are slippery, bumpy second rate spray seal , and we need good grippy tyres - top sellers in the UK like the Bridgestone 020 just dont cut it out here, Pilot Powers are about the minimum requirement on even a sport/ touring bike like my VFR.

And the Avons dont give up much if anything to the Powers on wet or dry bitumen, and are much better than the Saharas, at the speeds I ride on sealed roads.

Most of the minor roads and tracks I ride on are unsealed gravel / quarry rubble, and at road pressures the Distanzas perform better that most and cope perfectly well with the more modest pace I set myself off road.
I try to avoid mud and sand wherever possible, I am too old to enjoy chucking it down the road any more!

Update on my earlier post: after reading all sorts of articles I decided to try out the Heidenau tyres.

Heidenau K 60 Front 90/90 -21 TT 54T M/C
Heidenau K 60 120/90 -18 RF TT 71T M/C

£98 all in and I must say after 3000 miles I'm really happy with them

Used Heidenau K 60s for a while on my DR650 -stuck like shit to a blanket on the tar, good in the dirt but lethal in wet clay

1600km on rear and it looks half worn.
