We're hiring a pair of Road Kings in June and we really need to wire our satnavs direct to the battery, so the question is is the battery easily accessible or a right pain in the xxxx

I'm thinking of using crocodile clips, but my mate thinks they're vibrate off in the first 5 miles :D

Cheers :thumb2

Battery access ...

... is fairly straightforward, remove the seat; but have you thought how you're going to mount the GPS ?

hopefully with the handlebar clamp bits that come with the standard Zumo kit. So the batts under the seat, is it a spanner job or just keys cheers :D

listen to your mate.
I really hate it when he's right :D

No accessory socket or fag lighter?

Make sure the wires are routed well. A bike burning because you tampered is not going to impress the insurance company.

its under the seat ,get ,or take a small adjustable/leatherman,its a five minute job.
if we loosen the battery bolts to make a better connection (10mm spanner???) will it upset the ECU? Or is crocodile clips a reasonable plan?

Don't worry, we'll take care of the wires

Are you hiring in the UK or USA? In the UK the dealers usually fit an optimate connection to the battery, and you can buy an optimate to cigar lighter socket lead.

America, so unlikely to have any leads or power sockets which is a pity

Hi

Take a couple small croc clips get from Maplins there is n real currant draw :blastprobs will fit under the seat no probs at all . Unclip and gone I rode over 900 mile mine didn't come off .
If bothered a couple tie wraps sorted.
Easy peasy
Regards roger

USA is big with few roads so GPS not really necessary - not a lot of roads to choose from. TBH, I'd say you were making unnecessary work for yourself.

Only time I felt I needed it was trying to return the bike to the rental company In SF. I'd hire a cab and follow it next time.

You'll need to remove the caddy [12] by removing two screws [2]. The caddy then unclips from [9].

Attached to the top of the caddy are the ECU and bluetooth antenna plus an unused female socket. These just unclip.

purely personell, but as boxer said ,ive driven over there for the past 25 years or so ,never needed a sat nav, part of getting lost,is the adventure .
havingf said that ,ive never been lost .
its easy to ask some one for directions ,and can sometimes ,send you off to some where interesting .
besides ,they dont have roundabouts ,and dont really do corners ..
the saet on my raod king is fairly close to the battery ,if you go down the route of clips ,dont make them to big .
what ever you decide ,have a good trip ...

thanks for the picture boxer, that's usefull :thumb2

Having been to America once before, I'd agree you probably don't absolutely need a satnav, but I I'll be a lot happier with one :D

Can you hire a GPS form the bike hire peeps. It'll come with the relevant maps already installed.

It should be if you set fire to the bike! :D Have a good time :beerjug:
Will do! :D

Yes you can, but mine will have routes and waypoints set up on it, plus, I'm a bit tight so would resent renting a satnav as well as the bike when I have two satnavs at home :D

on a side note ,make sure you have medical insurance ,my last 2 day stay in hospital there cost $17000 ,no thats not a misprint ,thats seventenn thousand dollars .
We're very well insured, well, I though we were... $17000  I hope you got personal services with that!

If you can hire satnavs from the hire people they must have power supply and mounting arrangements on the bikes for them. Why don't you ask them?
