Road Legal Question

Can anyone tell me what is needed to make a bike road legal?
cheers
ed

I presume you mean does it need lights and indicators etc.?

I was told once that a bike's lights must work if fitted and the same applies to the indicators, if they're
not the bike might still be road legal.

Yeah thats what i was thinking, dont think it needs indicators, just white light at the front and red at the back. One way to find out i guess!

Are you taking road legal should you get stopped by the Gardai or should you have the machine technically inspected following an incident?

With the Gardai, a convincing smile might be enough if the bike looks somewhat legal.:aidan

For more in depth scrutiny :nenau

I'm sure Ogmios may point you in the right direction?

Or maybe call one of the custom builders and ask em what they do (especially about the frame number if they aren't modding an existing frame)?

Re lights etc.

white or yellow at the front.
red at rear. plus No. plate light, if not already part of the red tail light.
plus a red reflector at rear.

...and thats all thats mentioned is the Rules of the Road.
note - no mention of a brake light - but try riding without one if you like... :augie

indicators;
if fitted must work.
there is some specific year or other mentioned somewhere (i'll ask Mrs Og - who actually does know everything, on this topic anyhow ;)) as a "cut off point" regarding indicators - as in, after that date ALL Bikes had them fitted - so as a "standard fitting", they should be on the Bike and working.

mirrors - advisory.

Will you ask the lovely and very knowlegable Mrs Og if there is the equivalent of a daytime MOT in Ireland?
My Mucky DRZ has a UK daytime only MOT (obviously we don't have MOT's)
so wondering what that means in this country :nenau

apparently, in Ireland, you should have lights fitted to a road going machine. regardless of the time of day.
(i'd keep that MOT in your pocket - every little helps if stopped and a chat ensues ;)).

indicators,
from 1992 on, all road going Bikes had them as a standard fitting - so should be on the Bike.

however,
a Rider about to take his test on an '02 Reg. Bike had the misfortune of an electrical gremlin on his Bike the day before the test. the indicators wouldn't work!
Linda advised removing them completely.
no problem on test day.
but, he was asked to use Arm Signals on test.
as you may be asked by a Gard to demonstrate that you can / know the correct signal to give if you've no indicators on the Bike.

HTH.

lighting of vehicles

http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/plweb-cgi/fastweb?state_id=1230028544&view=ag-view&docrank=8&numhitsfound=11&query_rule=%28%28$query3%29%29%3Alegtitle&query3=lighting%20of%20vehicles&docid=9779&docdb=SIs&dbname=Acts&dbname=SIs&sorting=none&operator=and&TemplateName=predoc.tmpl&setCookie=1

If you are really bored over Christmas, go into the statute book, search "lighting of vehicles" and you will get all of the regulations and amendments from 1934 to 1996. Cheaper than sleeping pills and certainly not as addictive.

Of course if you wanted to know about something other than lights, ask someone else.

There is a Manual . Its Called Construction ,Equipment and Use.
Its Available from the Govt.Stationary Office.
The Book in Itself is Somewhat Dated and , i am sure there is a European
Manual , but dont know about it.
Dont go on a UK Spec ,manual , as theres is UK only , and Ours will be Euro.

Common Sense , Should prevail. You may well be Exempy from Indicators , that law may have
been relevant in the 50s, but a Landrover up the Arse will bring all this into 21st centuary Prospective.
Think , others safety , if not your Own.
