A quick question - having now finally realised (I have no idea what's brought it on!) that I may not be invincible I thought I'd get a copy of the roadcraft book and have a read.

But, I did a search on amazon and it seemed to come up with a couple of different versions (different lengths etc) and I wondered is there a particular version that's recommended / is there a "new/updated" edition that I should look out for or is it just a case of buy any one of the ones out there with the appropriate bits in the title (roadcraft, police, motorcycle) and it's all good?

Thanks

David

Motorcycle Roadcraft: the Police RidersHandbook is the one you want.

Also another: "Not the blue book" is quite useful.

Hope this helps.

Hi David

Here's a link to Roadcraft.
The driver's edition was updated and re-issued recently and a new rider's version is expected soon. AFAIK the changes will not be significant enough to justify waiting for the new edition.

The RoSPA SMART riders' group meets each Sunday at a variety of venues. Check the website http://www.rospasmart.com/navigation/Home.html

Come along for a chat and a cuppa, - and a free assessment ride if you're interested.

David

AS AN ALTERNATIVE WHY NOT LOOK INTO THE IAM, WHICH THE TRAINING IS BASED ON ROADCRAFT.

Thanks All

Think I'll stay out of the RoSPA / IAM discusison for a moment or three, get the book, have a read and then maybe look at one or both of these. However, thanks all for the pointer on what one I'm after and even the link directly to it! Very much appreciated.

wise man!
tis a good idea to;

get all the
information,
before you take up the best
position
use the most suitable
speed and gear
thus dealing with the hazard* by best possible use of
acceleration

*in this case the hazard being the entire feckin debate! :D

I went out with an IAM chappie really nice bloke but had just passed his bike test a few months earlier and I found the advice he gave me a bit scarey to say the least:eek:

never went back, think I'm safer riding the way I have for the last 20 odd years:thumb

Find a friendly ex copper who used to instruct :thumb

Read the book bit by bit and digest it, try to put a little into practice bit by bit and then gradually add more. Do not read it and then try to put it all into practice in one go.

As for Rospa and IAM, I was trained by organ grinder, not the monkey :hide

No matter how quick you are to pick stuff up I can't for the life of me understand how a guy that passed his test a few months before is allowed to impart his 'wisdom' on others :eek

all that can do is give the organisation bad press

Can you give us an example?

Exactly. A surefire way of annoying everyone I would have thought. :nenau
