Roadtec 01 shimmy

Looks like it was the tyre after all and both rims checked and well within spec. Now I have to deal with the other shop about getting a replacement and paying this invoice to prove it was the tyre.

Are they sure. Seems unlikely, unless the tyres were stored or fitted incorrectly. These things are built for high speed use. Were you able to watch/see exactly what work was done to check the rims/TPS? Experience suggests dealers/tyre shops are reluctant participants when it comes to diagnosing issues like this, aka 'ghosts', which don't produce a meaningful financial return.

I think GMoto Imports are the Metzler importer for your patch, so I think I would get them involved before dipping into your wallet any further. Then, if there is actually a defect, they will be obliged to pick up the tab for the check & replacement.

Good luck ..................... KEN

All I know is the bike was perfect until this tyre was put on so I do believe it was the tyre. I didn't watch them do any work but I did see the rim with no tyre on a balancing stand.

They rode it with the original tyre then fit another one to it for testing and the shimmy went away. The shop I bought it from was a regular bike accessory shop and the shop from yesterday was a BMW dealer. They charged me six hours labour and wrote all the details on an invoice.

The manager of the tyre department lives close by me so is going to pick up my rim and get it sorted so I don't have to go back for a fourth time. They have been really good about it to be honest and shit just happens sometimes. It's how you deal with that shit is the key.

All I wanted was some new tyres!!! lol

Most people will put up with a lot of shit if they are treated well and you would know that in your work that the way you talk to people makes all the difference in a situation. Clearly this whole situation has been annoying but ranting would not have achieved anything plus the shop has been great. Although I'll see how "great" they are going to be with this invoice lol.

Ha Ha, yep you certainly pay for the BMW customer service, but so far personally I have nothing to complain about - fingers crossed!

Hope it all gets sorted in your favour bud

Teapot, don't mind me asking, but do you ride 2-up/with luggage and what is your weight? Also, what is your riding style? I've been enjoying the Pirelli Scorpion Trail2 which have been brilliant and we're considering the Roadtecs. But after your report/photo I'm not so sure.

Have a look on youtube to see how he rides.. round the world! Or very 'spirited' when out with his mates very good vlogs and well worth subscribing! I guess teapotone pops news tyres on monthly!!

6 hours labour ................. WTF were they doing.

Perhaps it's me, but I think you might have lost me somewhere along the line here. I thought you went to a tyre supplier/fitting shop, independent of BMW, handed them the bike & asked them to source & fit a new set of Metzler Roadtec 01s. Now it sounds like you acquired the tyres elsewhere & got a tyre fitter to do the change. Did I miss something along the way  Then you have got the BMW dealer involved & they have absorbed 6 hours labour checking out the bike & switching tyres ........... one hour would sound a lot to me & now they could be held responsible for any damage/deformation in the tyre carcass too.

I can't speak for Australia, but here in the UK, your contract is with the supplier/fitter, who should ideally be one & the same. Then, if there is a fault with the tyre, or it is damaged during fitting, you know who precisely is at fault. That is why I suggested, if you were hitting a brick wall with the tyre shop, you should involve the Aus Metzler Importer - they supply the fitter & will need to know if there is say a faulty batch of rubber out there (the fronts are being manufactured in China currently). Thus I was a bit surprised to find the BMW dealer getting that deeply involved, so muddying the waters contracturally/legally & running up what must be a huge bill in the process, way beyond the value of the tyre itself.

I wish you well sorting this out. These are great tyres, maybe a bit on the sporty side for a GS, but impressive nonetheless. Let's hope you get to ride them as intended. Keep us posted.

The first shop is just an accessory shop and I only took the loose wheels in. When I took it back they rebalanced it and also noticed runout in the rim. I could also see it myself but they had nothing to measure it with.

I took it to the BMW dealer because they have all the equipment to check the rim. They test rode it multiple times with each ride taking ~30mins because they needed to get on the highway. They also did the same with rear and test fit front/rear TKC80 tyres for testing. They also measured the lateral and vertical runout on each rim then had to fit and balance the old tyres.

All this was to find the actual issue and in the end they found it was the front tyre. In hindsight I should have insisted the other shop change the front but I could see the runout the guy was talking about.

I'm now going back to the original shop for the fourth time this morning to get a new front tyre and talk to them about the invoice. It's been a huge pain in the arse as you can imagine but so far they have been good about it. Hopefully this will continue this morning.

The saga is over!!!!

They put another front on and it still did it. I found another shop that had a dynamic balancer and presto problem solved.

Don't let anyone tell you static balance is good enough if you are having issues!

How come, after 6 hours BMW didn't spot that?

The BMW shop also claimed static balance was enough so as far as I know that's all they did when balancing the wheels. Funny that the new tyre took half the weight as the original when they balanced it.

When they put it on the machine they do a static first and then a dynamic balance. The static balance was spot on but it needed 4 grams for the dynamic.

That 4 grams was enough to go from the bars oscillating 5mm constantly to perfect.

I've done under 4,500 miles and the rear is done. Totally had it.k

yep, same experience here ... after just 1000 miles on Metzeler Roadtec 01 ( grip bloody well) , there is noticeable wear and I cannae see it lasting past 4000 miles.
Next purchase will be 100% Continental ( maybe trail attack 2 or possibly road attack 3 )

Honestly, the new Dunlop Roadsmart 3's are absolutely fantastic for the road. Wet/dry grip is phenomenal, and so far the wear is pretty good too.

I've absolutely spanked them, commuting, rideouts, touring the Pico's, and track days, and they're still going with nearly nearly 6,000 miles!

They have been totally battered to see what they'll put up with, and I'm chuffed to bits with them.

Definitely my 1st choice for road tyres for the GS at the mo

had them at the Ron Haslem race school on the Fireblade... we all loved them..... but I stupidly didnt realise that was an option for the GS (19 inch front !)
Hey , I wouldnt have been surprised if they'd disappeared at 4000 miles too! ( like the much loved Metzeler )....6000 is amazing .
