Rock Oil Guardian 20w50

If you use it, where do you buy it?

Despite living in the town where it's made, and having bought it at the trade counter for years, they won't sell me any.

I've just had a bizarre and slightly annoying conversation with the Rock Oil trade counter man:

Me: Do you have any Guardian 20w50?

TC man: Sorry, we don't stock it here now but I can order you some - what's it for?

Me: My bike

TC man: Ah - I can't sell you any if it's for a bike, you'll have to go through one of our distributors (none of which are anywhere near me).

Me: (thinking what the f*ck?...) ok then, it's for my old Mini.

TC man: Too late sorry - you already mentioned bikes.

Me: So if I'd not mentioned my bike, you'd have ordered me some?

TC man: Yes, but only a pack of 4x4l (which wouldn't have mattered to me - I'd have bought the 4) - you see it's a 'motorcycle product' and we make more money from our bike oil distributors.

Me: So if I come back tomorrow and say id like some for my Mini?...

TC man: Sorry, I know your face now...


So feeling slightly piss*ed off I leave and drive around the local motorfactors and Halfords all of who only have gradeless 'economy' 20w50 which I wouldn't use in my mower let alone my bike.

So, anyone know the best place to buy Rock Oil 20w50?

Ta Mark - last time I was in, they didn't have 20w50 but I'll give them a ring (as I will with Demon Tweeks) :thumb2
 
Is this thread serious - or some obscure joke that only the 'in-crowd' might understand - if so. pleased explain.

Not sure what you don't understand. The story's quite self-explanatory. Trade counter refuses to sell oil (presumably) because of agreement/contract with retailers not to steal their sales.

The initial post and the thread title is pretty clear I'd have thought?...

Anyone know where I can get hold of rock oil guardian 20w50 :nenau

As is also clear - I'm not asking which oil to use, which brand to use or anything else oily. Of course, once you mention oil in a thread you tend to get responses like this in addition to the genuinely helpful replies thus far :rolleyes:

Yup.

Although I'm slightly miffed that they seem to discriminate against bikes as they'll sell you exactly the same oil if you say it's for a car:rolleyes:
 
Matt ask for the Strata 20/50, its a synthetic fortified oil (semi synth) it was supposed to replace the Guardian 20/50. Unfortunately I no longer have my trade account, I wasn't putting enough orders in.
Harley Davidson do a full synthetic 20/50 for about £14 a quart (slightly less than a litre), they also do a mineral 20/50 thats a bit cheaper. If it's good enough for the very hot running Harley V twins, its good enough for BMW flat twins.

Brand loyalty i can understand - its this having to hunt for 20w50 mineral - which as you have seen isn't ubiquitous - that I don't. i thought that was a joke.

but.. at least you can now join the rest of us in the 21st century with this new 'semi' formulation. :D

Though i have popcorn to hand for as and when the luddites notice this change.

I can see it now....

I just picked up 25l of Guardian 10/40 for £116
The distributor is in Crawley (West Sussex)& very helpful.

Don't know if this will help where you are.

Today I managed to find a local motor factor who is a Rock Oil stockist and has ordered me a couple of 5l cartons of 'Strata' semi synth 20w50. Although he sells nearly every Rock Oil product he says that even he finds it impossible to get 'Guardian' as Rock Oil have rebranded it as a 'motorcycle' product and will only sell through their motorcycle distributors :rolleyes:

I guess Rock Oil saw the opportunity to rip off bike owners and sell the same oil as a motorcycle product at a premium price...

I still think you should go back to the factory counter in the Groucho Marx disguise and as for oil for your old Mini just to find out whether the Rock Oil Guardian has a sense of humour.
