Rocker cover damage

I've just dropped my bike and scratched the RH side valve cover.
The bikes less than a year old and I'm not sure if I should replace or re-piant.

Has anyone had any success re-painting, is it a special high temp paint. If not perhaps I could just get a local paint shop to do a professional job.

Any help would be appreiated, Nick

i dropped mine a year or so again...

gently wet and dryed it back to get any burrs off... then coated all the gouges with some primer (just to seal it)

always meant to get around to spraying it... but just never have...

everyone comments they look better with a few battle scars :augie

Trouble is that you'll go to all that expense and then it'll happen again. Might be best just to leave it as is, or at least until you fit engine bars. Mines been over on both sides and immediately afterwards every time I saw the bike it looked awful, but after a couple of weeks I don't notice the marks

I've just discovered that new covers are £114, which I suppose isn't megga expensive, but maybe for a while i'll just try and live with this.
Also I expect getting it repainted will cost almost as much.

£114 - feck ! Oh well, they were cheap for the 1150s, about £40 iirc.

I've got the rocker cover protectors on mine - you could always fit those & it'll probably cover up the scrape...

I guess it's because they're magnesium on the 1200, also on some components BMW claim they've reduced the price by 40% which might apply to 1150 parts.

On the basis that it'll probaly happen again, I need to consider engine bars. Are these expensive.

Also regrding dropping the bike, I run into problems when I've got the missus on board when coming to a halt I put the wrong foot down with the camber direction and then find I can't support the combined weight of me the missus and the bike because it's leaned too far over and down she goes. If it leans beyond about 10 to 15 deg, my leg simply isn't strong enough.

Put the other foof down first, maybe....;)

I could of course have been less polite....

I've Hepco & Becker bars fitted, ran down a wall yesterday, scraped the bar and outside of my boot, touchup with silver hammerite and good to go again - saved a cracked cover:rob

Some years ago I dropped my R1150R shortly after I got it and scratched the rocker cover. I then bought and fitted the plastic rocker cover protectors - and didn't drop it again.

When I got the 1200GS I decided to fit the rocker covers from day one and it seems to have worked - not dropped the bike so far (3+ years), so no scratches. Fingers crossed.

A friend with a 1200ST has the same dilemma having dropped his bike and scored the cover, I think he is going to get a new cover fitted - about £100+. Maybe it's better to wait until just before you sell the bike before shelling out the dosh (unless you fit crash bars / protectors at the same time), just in case...
