The lower front rocker cover threads on both left and right pots on my 1999 R1150GS are thoroughly stripped - I can't nip the bolts up at all.

Partly this is due to my hamfistedness over the last 38k, partly that of the previous owner on the first 60k. It wasn't really an issue until I fell off in March as they nipped up just enough. That off must have dislodged things - the top 1/2 of the outside, er, face (?) of the rocker cover hit the deck and got throroughly scraped. Oil is leaking now and I cannot just ignore the problem.

Can they be helicoiled (or other such product)? Any other suggestions for the best way to sort this out?

Cheers

Helicoil

Hi M,
As you mention yourself, heli-coil inserts should do the trick - and be better than new.

I did this to one of mine - got it and another one which seemed on the way out repaired by BMW garage very reasonably (about £20 for the two) - not helicoil but something similar. Since then I just tighten them up by until hand tight ad not had a problem.

Me too. Easy job - think its M6 but do check - just make sure you get out all the swarf when you cut the new thread.

Easy to do if you don't remember the collar on the bolts. It is surprising how "loose" 7nm feels!! I had one go and it didn't leak so it took a while to get it sorted but helicoil was fine and the threads are easy to get to.

Nice One.

I've had the faceful of swarf as well in the past. :augie

And yes, I agree it is very satisfying when it goes well and I often wonder whether I should continue and do some more.

two of mine went a long time ago. Helicoiled all rocker cover threads, replaced all bolts. Its worth it while you have the covers off and the tools around you. 120,000mls later and still good. :thumb
