Hi MikeP
We are sailing from Plyouth at 12.30 friday afternoon,we would like accomodation on the friday night, and aim for La Rochelle on saturday.any ideas for accomodation gratefully recieved.
A 12.30 sailing should get you to Roscoff around 7.00 pm local time, you ought to be clear of the ferry terminus by 7.30, that gives you about two hours of good daylight for travel and then still about an hour before real darkness.
You need to give us a bit more info about what you intend doing between Roscoff and La Rochelle. If La Rochelle is your destination and all you want to do is get there, you will really reduce your accommodation options to the travel-lodge type place.
If on the other hand you intend to bimble down taking your time along the Atlantic coast, then B&B is your best option. Although they probably won't have dedicated parking, most will have some kind of out-building that will be made available if you ask.
To be honest, unless you are staying in the centre of a major town, security isn't really an issue, whereas, those travel-lodge type places (Ibis, Campanile etc.) are often on the edge of towns and the area's can be pretty 'industrial' and unsavoury. Some but not many will have any secure parking. Often they don't even have any reception staff beyond a few hours early evening. You have to use the telephone to get someone to turn out and let you in.
A good bet, if you are taking the slow option, is to use small town hotels. If you have a satnav, you can rely on it to find accommodation. I've done it a few times in France and have always been pleasantly surprised each time. Actually it adds to the fun sometimes not to have pre-ordained places to stop. It removes the pressure to get to a particular place.
Have you been to La Rochelle before? It's a yachting centre these days and like here, anything to do with sailing means that normal prices don't apply. Pick a sum and then quadruple it!
I don't know why you are heading to La Rochelle but unless you have accommodation arranged there, I'd make it a day trip (to see the U-Boat pens) and then push on to Bordeaux or somewhere. In Bordeaux, the Holiday Inn has a secure underground car park, it's fairly central and there are some nice routes inland from there. Towards Bergerac will take you through some nice country.
Not knowing what you intend doing makes guessing what sort of accommodation and riding you want more difficult.
