Any suggestions for an overnight stay with secure bike parking in roscoff.Sailing from Plymouth on 11th May. Four of us all on GS`s heading for toulouse or further south if time allows.

Have you been to Roscoff before?

It's a fishing port, lots of great places to eat but it's not a cheap place to stay. Not much choice either, even a pretty basic room in the Ibis will set you back about £60.

Bottom-line is, Roscoff is pretty isolated and they have a monopoly.

What time is your arrival?

I use Plymouth - Roscoff a fair bit, I always get as much distance between me and the ferry-port as possible (the surrounding countryside is pretty bleak away from the coast too).

Hi MikeP

We are sailing from Plyouth at 12.30 friday afternoon,we would like accomodation on the friday night, and aim for La Rochelle on saturday.any ideas for accomodation gratefully recieved.

Hi,

As Mike says, Roscoff tends to be expensive and heavily booked up. You might try one of the nearby towns, such as St Pol de Leon, which is pleasant in its own right. I've used the Hotel de France there to catch an early morning sailing from Roscoff to Plymouth, and it was simple, fairly cheap, and has private off-road parking. Link below:

Otherwise you might try something like the Campanile Hotel in Morlaix. Nothing special, and 15 minutes walk out of the town (which is worth seeing) but cheap and clean and with its own car park.

Hope this helps

Hi MikeP

A 12.30 sailing should get you to Roscoff around 7.00 pm local time, you ought to be clear of the ferry terminus by 7.30, that gives you about two hours of good daylight for travel and then still about an hour before real darkness.

You need to give us a bit more info about what you intend doing between Roscoff and La Rochelle. If La Rochelle is your destination and all you want to do is get there, you will really reduce your accommodation options to the travel-lodge type place.

If on the other hand you intend to bimble down taking your time along the Atlantic coast, then B&B is your best option. Although they probably won't have dedicated parking, most will have some kind of out-building that will be made available if you ask.

To be honest, unless you are staying in the centre of a major town, security isn't really an issue, whereas, those travel-lodge type places (Ibis, Campanile etc.) are often on the edge of towns and the area's can be pretty 'industrial' and unsavoury. Some but not many will have any secure parking. Often they don't even have any reception staff beyond a few hours early evening. You have to use the telephone to get someone to turn out and let you in.

A good bet, if you are taking the slow option, is to use small town hotels. If you have a satnav, you can rely on it to find accommodation. I've done it a few times in France and have always been pleasantly surprised each time. Actually it adds to the fun sometimes not to have pre-ordained places to stop. It removes the pressure to get to a particular place.

Have you been to La Rochelle before? It's a yachting centre these days and like here, anything to do with sailing means that normal prices don't apply. Pick a sum and then quadruple it!

I don't know why you are heading to La Rochelle but unless you have accommodation arranged there, I'd make it a day trip (to see the U-Boat pens) and then push on to Bordeaux or somewhere. In Bordeaux, the Holiday Inn has a secure underground car park, it's fairly central and there are some nice routes inland from there. Towards Bergerac will take you through some nice country.

Not knowing what you intend doing makes guessing what sort of accommodation and riding you want more difficult.

We have to be back in UK thursday morning at the latest due to work commitments, the aim is to get as far south as possible in the time allowed. We are aiming to do around 250 to 300 miles a day.We have no accomodation booked, but thought it would be a good idea to have the first night booked. We would like to see the millau bridge, but are keeping plans to a minimum.

I can tell you of a fairly cheap and secure travel lodge in Rodez not far from Millau. (Do you have a satnav?) It's nice ride from Bordeaux.

If you want to see the bridge, the best view is really from below.

Roscoff/La Rochelle

Spent a lot of time in my youth in Roscoff area. As others have said the hotels are pretty expensive. I think there is an Ibis which gets booked up quickly otherwise a more pricey option is the Le Gulf Stream Hotel its in a quiet area with parking but not secure.

For La Rochelle I can't recommend the BB Hotel chain enough its very centrally located near the old port and extremely well priced with rooms for 2 and up to 5 http://www.hotel-bb.com/detailhotels.phtml?hotelid=4253.

You'll find a B&B hotel next to the Campanille at Morlaix and its cheaper. If you want you can eat in the Camp... or go over to the local Hypermarche. The B&B hotels have a carpark which is locked at night and you can generally park the bike near your room.
Try http://www.hotel-bb.com/.
